torque arm mounting bracket for 9" ford rear end is this a bolton piece just for the f-body TA?

Thought the torque arm mounting holes where welded to the diff. housing like the 10 &12 bolts?

I may be building a 9" so I maybe asking a few ?s here I am new.

Yes its a bolt on bracket just for the F body torque arm setup. Its a very stout piece as well. I am not sure there is a way it could be welded on the rear like the 10&12 bolt rears because of the removable center section.

Default 9"

the guy next door has a 3rd member he will give me for $20. he said it came out of a early 70s ford Granda same as the torineo.

the only thing w/ his 3rd member is it's a 4.10 gear ratio,my car is a A4
it still mite be whorth changing the gear.
plus he'll help me install a new rear end.

I'm checking into buying a 9" houseing w/ axels to see if it mite be whorth building one.
do all 9" houseings have these 3 holes for the TA bracket?

Thanks for any advice

I would tend to think that most manufacturers would have provisions for bolting on a torque arm if its a retrofit housing to fit in 93-02 F-bodies. I cannot say for sure if they are the same, with 3 bolt mounting(in the same spots). Alot of people do budget 9" setups using old Ford 9" third members and what not, so just check and see what type of 9" housing you are buying, and whether or not it comes with the torque arm bracket first.

Default moser f-body houseing

looks like moser eng. has a houseing for around $900. W/ axels that has the 3 holes to mount a TA bracket.

? will the axel bearings have to be pressed on after the brakes are installed.

or are they allready pressed on? I don't have a way to press on axel bearings will I have to assemble this up then tow it to a shop to have the bearings pressed on?

how will I know if the 3rd member yoke is for a 1310 U-joint, read here it's a PITA to install a 1350 U-joint to stock DS?

Thanks

Yes the bearings need to be pressed on after the backing plates. The moser rear housing/axle package also comes with the torque arm bracket as well. (in case you werent sure)

Default assemble then press bearings?

assemble then press bearings? sounds like I'l have to assemble then tow to a shop for the bearings to be pressed on?

even if I get a brand new 9" I will still be in the same boat meaning assemble all W/ brakes an all then have bearings pressed on?

Thanks

Nope its actually quite simple. You can assemble the rear on a bench or a pair of jackstands, then just take your new axles and old backing plates to a shop and slide the backing plates on the axle, then press the bearings on. Then take the axles home and assemble the rear(which is very easy).

The yoke on the 3rd member will most likely need to be replaced since it may be a different type of DS used in the ford vehicle. For example the yoke on my mustang rear is a large circular flange, and the driveshaft mounting is different. So when you replace this yoke on the 3rd member you can get one for either 1310 or 1350 u joint.

The stock driveshaft can be switched to a 1350 u joint quite easily actually. Alot of places sell a conversion u joint for the stock Driveshaft to do this, you can switch it yourself or have a shop do it for you. I bought the conversion u joint at a local shop that does driveline work on heavy duty trucks, and they they installed it on my driveshaft for free because i had it with me. Took them about 5 minutes.

Default LT1 backing plates

are the LT1 backing plates the same as the LS1s?

I may be able to get LT1 backing plates can these be used to press the axel baerings on?

what I want is a rear end allready to install when I need it? meaning use the existing U-joint (which is preaty strong allready right?)

Thanks

No LT1 backing plates are not the same. Perhaps you can buy some used LS1 backing plates from a wrecked car at the junkyards tho.

And you can buy a yoke for your 9" 3rd member so you can reuse your stock driveshaft and U joint. Looks like your only issue is finding the correct backing plates.

this may take some time at least I'm getting good infor for this project.

Lastly for right now what do you think about the 37 year old 3rd member replacing the yok seams OK for a buget 9"?

will just replacing the bearings & pinoin seal be OK if carrier looks good?

Thanks

Well the 3rd member itself should be fine, but i am sure it would be a good idea for you to have it checked out, afterall parts for a 9" are relatively cheap...and its pretty inexpensive labor wise sense its so easy to work on. You would also wanna check to see if it has some sort of limited slip or posi, since the last thing you want is some killer 9"....and a one-tire-fire on the back of your hotrod.
