Default Anyone know the mathmatical forumula for...

Does any one know the formula for figuring out a given rpm if you know the rear gearing, over all tire diameter and the transmisison gear at a certain speed?

I don't know how to do it and would like to know.

Like, what rpm will i be turning with 4.10 gears in a six speed car with stock 17 inch SS wheels and tires?

That's a hypethetical question. I want the forumula for how to calculate that kind of info.

Thanks guys,
Alan

I can write it out if you need it but this is easier.

Thanks guys but does anyone know the actual formula? I'd like to be able to do it on paper when i need it and not have to rely on the computer to do it for me.

Thanks!

Alan

Well, you could do this:

R = [RPM]
T = [transmission gear ratio (eg: 3.4:1 would be 3.4)]
F = [final drive ratio (rear end gear, as in 3.42 or 4.10)]
C = [circumference of rear tire in feet]

Fm = ((R/T)/F) * C [feet per minute]

Mm = Fm/5280 [miles per minute]

Mh = Mm/60 [miles per hour]

So. Mh = ((((R/T)/F)*C)/5280)/60

Am I close?

Engine Rpm * Tire Diameter/ axle ratio / 336 = speed

The unit for tire diamter is inches. Stock is 25.6 but when I calculate it comes out to be 25.1 according to the drag strip. Not sure if the tire diameter is slightly shorter when loaded. That is the toughest part about calculating vehicle speed, is figuring out the actual diamter of a loaded tire. Slicks are because they seem to grow at high speeds. I have never got a straight answer to how much because they are all different depending upon sidewall height and etc.
