Default Are you SURE I have posi??

Ok, lets get this straight once and for all.

I was going to a pumpkin patch on a dirt lot. I noticed that the driveway was rocks instead of dirt. Kinda like sombody poured rocks all over the entrance for some reason.
Well, to be on the safe side, i drove in slower than usual, and the rear started spinning. I GOT STUCK IN THE DAMN ROCKS!! <img border="0" alt="[Banging Head]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_banghead.gif" />
Now, i straightened out the front end, and put it in reverse...to make a longer story short, I noticed the right rear was the only tire spinning. Some kids came and helped push the car out while i had it in reverse. We got it out after 5 mins of embarrassment. And get this...a fellow camaro owner just drove by and saw me, but didnt bother to stop. Some brotherhood we have here, eh?? J/K <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Can anybody VERIFY if we have posi traction on my 2001 Z28? I think my code was GU2, which means i have 2.73's...

You you have posi but its not strong enough for the other tire to spin loose. Since both wheels move independently they recieve less power and thats why the one wheel spun freely. If you cant light them up on the street and leave a patch with both your posi might be going out soon and would stay away from abuse though.

How does posi go bad though? Isnt posi the gearing in the differential?
I just wanted to make sure, cause only one tire was spinning, and i thought through PosiTrac, BOTH tires spin at the same time...
Can anybody set this <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> straight??

I thought our cars had the Torsen diff? With no spider gears and the screw type gear. Anyway. I think i have a problem with mine as well. I leave nice 1 wheel burnouts and a some real nicew wheelhop on the 1-2 shift with the right wheel. Once in a while they both will decide to chirp. oh yeah, and a gear whine that i can hear over the radio when its all the way up. But everything is ok, as per a GM dealer.

Whether you have a Torsen or an Auborn differential, you have a posi unit.

ALL LS1 F-bodies have posi as standard equip.

2.73, 3.23, or 3.42 > Its makes no difference.

Tell ya what.... Go out on the street. Hold the brakes. Give it throttle until the rear wheels start to spin hard. You will put down 2 very black marks. You can even have soneone outside the car looking at the rear wheels.

If it only spins the right rear tire, your posi unit is trashed.

Better yet throw out that crap 10 bolt and get a 12 bolt with some gears, HD EATON posi and t/a cover. I dump my clutch with my slicks and neither tire can't stop spinning.

With a torsen one wheel has to have some friction to transfer to the other wheel. If its spinning freely (like its jacked off the ground or stuck in sand), the other wheel will not spin.

What confuses this even more is that in '98 SLP offered an upgrade to a Torsen HD unit on the SS's and Firehawks. In '99 and later, SLP's upgrade is an Auburn HD unit. Clear as mud, eh?

The only way to no for sure is to look at the option code in your glove box. If the Code G80 is present then you have a posi rear.

Is a limited slip better than a true posi? Depends on the application. For street driving and autocrossing, I would say yes. For drag racing, I would say not.

As for the different wheel speeds think of it this way. When going around a corner the inside wheel has less distance to travel versus the outside wheel. Therefore, the outside wheel will need to travel slightly faster than the inside to cover that distance. Kind of like NASCAR, which uses a true posi. They use a two different size of wheels to compensate since they are going around in circles.

The correct terminology for the rear end is a limited slip differential. Look at your window sticker if you have it. What this does is this: It provides power to both wheels to start. If one starts to spin or break loose it transfers power to the one that has grip. This setup helps on the road going around corners since both wheels do not turn at the same rate as on a posi. This is not a posi like years ago.

I had a 2000 Trans Am that did the same thing. I was on snow and noticed only right wheel spinning. I took it back to the dealer and when they opened up the rear end IT WAS THE WRONG ONE FROM THE FACTORY! After replacement worked great. Now have 2002 and it also works like it should, both wheels spin.
