Default drill mod question?

I have a spare master cylinder out of a 98z that I am going to do the drill mod to and install in my 01z, just wanting to make sure that it won't cause any problems and that there aren't any differences between the two years?

I was also wandering what the best clutch fluid to use would be? I've think I remember reading a couple posts that people are using some type of high temp fluid to help prevent heat soak?

Thanks in advance for your replies, any info would be appreciated!

I suggest you use the '01 MC...this is due to the fact that the drill mod is done to the braid not the MC it self...and since you need to remove the MC to get to the braid and do the drill mod...I would just keep the '01 MC...and as far a clutch fluid goes...just make sure it is mineral based DOT 3...do NOT use synthetic brake fluid...it will eat through the seals...I just went to the dealership and got myself some GM brake fluid...and it worked fine...

I would drill out the line you have then install it on the 01 MC.I've run synthetic brake fluid in all my hydrolic clutches with no problems.

Thanks for the suggestions.I should have given more details on my first post. I'm going to have my tranny worked on(pulled out)under warranty and the mechanic that works on my car gave me a spare 98 MC. He said to do the drill mod on it and he will just swap out the master cylinders for free! It would save me lots of time if I could get this done while the tranny is out. I was just wandering if there are any differences between the 98 and 01 models, I know the slaves were updated but I'm not sure about the master?

I did some research on part numbers, the 98 and 01 master numbers don't match so I don't think I'm going to use the 98 master I'll have to figure out something else. I hope I can talk him into just switching the line but then he would have to bleed the mc. I hate ask him to do that I'm not sure if it would take him much more time to bleed it, cause time is money for him,but he might still do it.

I am a bit confused here...dropping the tranny will not make the swapping of MCs any easier since the MC is located under the brake booster in front of the car...the SLAVE cylinder is the one that is located inside the tranny...and you still have to remove the MC to connect the drilled line...and yes he would have to bleed the MC...but that doesn't take long...especially if he bench bleeds it...

And about synthetic fluids...they are a not recommended for our clutch hydraulics...not trying to knock on Slowhawk...just make a search on "synthetic clutch fluid" and judge for yourself....

I recommend you go to installuniversity.com...and look under drill mod for install instructions....that way you will know what is involved...and see that dropping a tranny will not make a difference in the install time of an MC...maybe the mechanic was talking about the slave cylinder? ...anyways...good luck man....

Sorry bout the confusion I went and looked at the master cylinder on my Z you're right Rayo, anyway after explaining to my mech that the masters had different #'s he said he would just drill out the line and bleed it himself I got lucky. This guy is cool(he is a gearhead also)I also bought a steel 3-4 shift fork he is going to install while my tranny is apart.

Rayo I did a search on using synthetics and it's about 50/50 I think I'll play it safe and use gm fluid. I guess I'll just live with the mushy pedal caused by heat soak. It's too bad no one makes a high temp mineral based fluid

My car is going in tommorow I'm guessing I'll get it back in about a week. Thanks for all the help I'll post my results!!

Glad I could help man...there is a high temp clutch fluid...I believe it is called ATE super blue....I could not find it locally when I did the drill mod...but the drill mod itself makes some difference in the mushy feeling pedal...also if you have after market headers/y-pipe...make sure that the MC line is not running too close to them...make sure it is tucked inside the heat shield....later man...and good luck...

It's good that you got all the info you need.
As for the synthetic,it's all in what you believe, alot of people put synthetic in there master to try to fix a problem that is already there.Synthetic will not cause leaks!!But if there is a minor leak it will amplify it because the fluid particles are finer. The main reason I run synthetic is because I ride my clutch hard at the track which causes alot of heat,2 clutches in 1 summer .So I need all the protection I can get from boiling the fluid.
