To get gears or not. First let me start out I have a A4 Z28 with minimal bolt ons. Long tube Headers, ORY, and Corsa Catback and a lid. My transmission took a sh*t on me last summer so I need to get a new transmission. I am going to change my torque converter as well at this time. I am going with a FLT Level 4 Street Strip Tranny with a Vigilante 3600 Single Disk Lock up converter. My question is I have the 2.73 gears in my car right now. Would it be wise for me to upgrade these to 3.73 gears while I am at it. This is mostly a street driven car but does get taken to the track once in a while. Thanks ahead of time.

Its up to you really. Your going to lose MPG but gain in acceleration. The 2.73s will keep your car halfway economic gas wise but the 3.73s wont lose you MUCH mileage but will gain in the bottom end you need to choose whats more important to you.

I am looking at 3.73's from the start because I want to do it once and be done with it, that is until I wreck my rear. I am going with the larger stall about max that I have seen recommended for street use so why not go all out with the gears right away too. Just fyi I plan on doing heads and cam next in the near future when I can afford to so it won't be long from what I have been told on this rear.

i didnt even have to read any of this thread before i was going to say "hell yeah, get some gears" 3.73's are great...i can tell you that cruising on the interstate at 70mph, the rpm's will be right around 3000 rpms...your rear tires wont like you for too long and i usually get around 250 mile per tank on a slightly rich tune...i would recommend that you wait to upgrade your gears until you have the new rearend you are looking for...that way you dont pay for 3.73's twice if you dont have to...just my $.02

Im basically in the same boat as the original poster, I was told by friends of mine and mechanics to go for 3.73s with the stall and cam i have, the biggest drawback they told me was as another poster stated your rear tires wont like you.
