Thumbs up 9 inch rear driveshaft length

Over the past year we started making the length of the PST driveshafts we sell for the Moser 9 inch one inch longer than the ones we sell for the 10 bolt and 12 bolt rears. In doing this the splines will be engaged into the transmission the same distance as they are from the factory. Generally it does not cause a problem if the driveshaft length is too short by this difference, the one in my own Camaro needs to be longer as well, and we're running 1.29 60 ft times with it and the spline are in perfect condition. I will be getting a longer driveshaft for mine, we used the same PST driveshaft between the turbo 400 I was using and the Powerglide I have now.
I had a customer call last week who I have sold a Moser 9 inch to last year and a PST driveshaft. He has had a driveline vibration that he could not get rid of, and while I did not think that a longer driveshaft would take care of the vibration, I sent him one. He received the new driveshaft and installed it, and guess what, it took care of the vibration!
PST has always used the 44.25 dimension for the 12 bolt and 9 inch driveshafts, but I have been spec'ing out the 9 inch driveshafts at 45.25. If you have a nine inch with a driveline vibration, a longer driveshaft may be the cure to your problem. Bob

Way to go, Bob!

I bet that guy was one happy camper. Chasing down vibrations can be a PITA. Nice to have the solid engagement there and I imagine the extra inch is easily taken up by adjustable TA and LCAs...

Yes, a lot of these cars typically have the rear sitting .5 too far back in the wheelwell. This is not normally noticed until 28 tall tires are mounted on the car. By moving the rear forward with adjustable lower control arms, some of the extra driveshaft length that may be needed is made up. Bob

I had bad vibrations with my 9" and driveshaft install. Bought new adjustable lower control arms and moved the rear forward and most of the vibration went away. I have a feeling that when I did have the vibration, it was bad enough to put some wear and tear on the tailshaft bushing in the transmission. Once I get the trans rebuild I should finally be vibration free

When was this vibration occurring, under what conditions? I have a buddy that has a A4 camaro that has a nasty vibration at 80mph when he lets of the gas, and this is after getting the shaft balanced. I measured from center U-Joint to center U-joint and it is exactly 41" Long. Another thing that is funny is the car has a steel drive shaft witch is odd for a 2002 that was bought with only 14k miles.

The vibration was at highway speeds.

Take a look at the diagram above. For the nine inch we figure 45.25 for the X dimension. Bob

i have a severe vibration but i think its because mine is too damn long. i need a pry bar to get it past the yoke on the rear when i put it in or take it out. and thats on an unloaded suspension.

Measure yours from the diagram I posted above and let me know how long it is. Bob

Quite a while ago. For the nine inch, dim X should be 45.25. Bob

I just noticed that you have a Dana 60, I'm not sure what the length should be for the Dana 60. You should have .75 to 1.0 before the driveshaft bottoms out in the transmission. Bob

Bob my moser 12bolt with the 1350 forged yolk required a 1/2 inch shorter driveshaft
than stock due to the longer rear end yolk.

well the x dimension is 42 15/16" so that would make it 2.3125" shorter then the 9" shaft you use. would that pst aluminum shaft be able to handle 800rwhp/ 800 rwtq in an m6 car? and is their addition pricing for having one the shorter legnth?

Yes indeed, it will handle the power.

That is my car in the video on the right side of this link.
Same price for the shorter length. Thanks! Bob
