Quaife differential
Anyone familiar with the new Quaife differential. Looking into this through RPM and would be interested to hear your experience.

Those are very expensive and are popular with the imports. A Torsen or Truetrac would be my next choice if you are looking for a worm gear style differential.

Scott all I know is there are no clutches or springs just gears. So yes I would expect there are worm gears involved.

The Truetrac or Torsen are the same design as a Quaife and I have no knowledge if one is stronger that the next. I guess it all depends on your budget, Average Truetrac is $450.00 and Last I heard a new Torsen is around $750.00.

Quaife make very nice diffs, and usually have steel billet carriers. I think a lot of them come with a lifetime warranty too, although no doubt there are catches.
That said....Im using a Ford Racing Torsen in my 8.8"....so far its great, and cheap IMO.
I wouldnt even consider a locker or plated type diff.

When the tru-trac breaks...what gives ?
In any of the pics Ive seen, I think its usually the cheap cast carrier that fails ??
I would have no hesitation in thinking a Quaife would be stronger than any typical cheap US diff, or a plated style diff that retains a diff pin.
A friend broke his Unitrax Viper diff last year, and he's switching to a Quaife for his rebuild. Its circa 900rwhp......he might even go faster than me some day
If I couldnt have got my 8.8" Ford Torsen so cheap, I would have bought a Quaife.
As with you John....absolutely no way in hell will I ever have a spool in my car again, and the thought of a locker doesnt have much more appeal.
The spool was only a temporary measure anyway, but I never thought they would be so bad..
Add to that, it didnt improve my 60fts or traction one bit.

Do Ford Racing make a Torsen for the 9" too ??
I think the one in my 8.8" is great.
just took the rear end apart to swap gears, and both diff, and new Mark Williams shafts look fine
Im very pleased to see that !!!!! The Moser shafts had a habit of twisting

the quaife is a really nice diff. you can't even compare a true trac to a quaife. very very high quality and i believe it has a lifetime warranty even when you're racing it. you broke the trutrac with 940rwhp? dam that's still pretty good...im surprised you're not twisting the splines on your 31 spline axles.

Quaife is known for their racing support and standing behind their product. They are expensive, so it really depends on how bad you plan to beat on it. If you are out on road courses and getting after it on the regular, you will benefit from the extra support.
If you plan on just drag racing/street driving the car, I doubt you will get any benefit from the extra expense.

The benefit from the extra expense, is a stronger diff, that is less likely to break.
Whats the point in buying cheap diffs, if they break all the time !!!

I knew when I put my 9 inch in with a tru-trac my differential was going to be my weak link in my rear but it lasted almost 2 years with 900+ hp in a 4000 lb car so I am not complaining about my tru-trac. I will definitely stay with a differential but will consider going with a Quaife if it will be stronger and possibly not break on me.
