8.8 in my 02 Z28
i recently bought a mustang 8.8 with 33 spline axles, 4.11s, detroit locker, lower control arms, torque arm and panhard bar.......we did the install today, and of course we had a few problems but we got everything worked out. Holy S%#T those gears make a difference with the cam!!!! but im curious, why does everyone condemn the 8.8 over the 9", 12 bolt and D60?
oh and ill have pics up either tomorrow or sunday!
Big thanx to Zack at LS1 PowerTuning

coming from a former mustang owner and enthusiast i can agree strongly, with some axles and a diff. they are capable of holding a truckload of power, but i always heard they were not worth the money in fbodys, i was just curious why?

I already told you why...it is because most require some serious fabrication to get them to fit with the F-body suspension, and most of that is due to the torque arm mount.
...and then there's the GM 12-bolt which is an 8.875" ring gear, so in theory, it should be even stronger than an 8.8", but the 9" has a better pinion support and makes it easier to set gears with the removable third member.

i need to get some details on my setup b/c it went in like it was made for the car......
but i was really worried about the gear ratio ( 4:11), if anyone is on the fence about doin gears, especially if they are cammed, take it from me, do it and dont look back

how much did you pay for the rear?? and did it really bolton like it was made for it?? what did you have to do to make it fit if nething?? interested because im saving up for a new rear i was saving for moser 9" $2600bux but still got alot of saving to do so i would definetly consider this.... plus i really dont care if it came out of a ford... i will call it a aftermarket custom 8.8 lol...

If there's a way to effectively eliminate the torque arm or make a strong torque arm mount for the 8.8, it is definitely a light-years better rear than the 10 bolt. However, this hasn't happened yet for the 8.8 and has for 3 other very viable rear housings.

Building an 8.8 can be done with a competent welder/fabricator. Seen one in a members car before. Name was Bane. He is on here somewhere. Its crazy for anyone to state that you cant use it because it dont have a Tq arm provision. Well neither does a nine inch. But the aftermarket took care of that. You will need to use your stocker for parts, like for the LCAs,PHB, and of course fab a Tq arm mount. My 12 bolt is fabbed with ford housing ends for ford axles and ford big bearings. But the GM center section. And same guy was running an AOD at the time. GM power and Ford power trane. Talk about a hybrid.
