They had it right in the '60s because they offered something for everyone. Those show guys, who want to look good.... the RS. The track guys, who wanted a sports car that will turn.... the Z28. The strip guys, who wanted to go as fast as possible in a straight line.... the SS. & if you wanted the performance plus the looks, you could get an RS/Z28 or an RS/SS

Nowadays, it's one size fits all.

Back to the ZL-1. What's the fastest you guys seen a car on street tires? That's where the ZL-1 should be, that's what MotorTrend is going to test.

Stock except for a Spec clutch but it did go several 13.0s at same mph with stock clutch anyhow. To me thats rippin pretty good for a stock car listed for 315hp or whatever it is. I dont understand how these 426hp new camaros arent running faster.
because theyre something in the neighborhood of 4000lb curb weight lol. The 2001-2002 SS & Ram Air were rated higher than 315. They'd put down 315-320 stock through a 6speed. given a 15% loss of power through the drivetrain, It translates to roughly 375hp at the fw if I did my math correctly. So, even though the 5th gen might have 50more hp, it's also 400-500lb heavier. The added weight offsets the hp gain. If it was the same weight as a 4th gen with 50more hp, it'd probably be half a second quicker, assuming it got traction. I'm sure you get the idea here lol

saw an auto Zl1 on the other forum running 11.7 bone stock down to the tires. Has to be the fastest stock ZL1 of all time lol.. Never seen a car with such varying times as those.

Most of the 07-11 GT500's at my local drag strip run 14's if it's any consolation lol It's got so much to do with the driver. I'll never respect car and driver's times (as well as most magazine's times) after seeing the 98 Camaro SS lose to the 98 Mustang Cobra in back to back drag races
I believe that was the same magazine that compared the LS1 Firebird, LS1 Camaro, and a 2V Mustang GT and put the camaro in 1st place, the GT in 2nd place, and the TA in 3rd place...?

Also, the LSA CTS-V's have been as low as 11.8's, and that's with less power, more weight, smaller tires, and the older version of suspension. I'm not sure why more ZL1's aren't in the mid 11's.

i can tell you all why..

I have a cts-v coupe..

it has went 11.42 at 126 on drs..
guys do big ******* burnouts, needlessly, and throw a TON of heat in the blower. my v stock, on stock tires, went 12.02..

the guys going in the 11s are chilling them down, not doing burnouts and letting the car work..

just for referance..

there is NO reason for a pullied car with cold air and the MUCH better exhaust that is on the zl1 and 300 pounds to not run damn near as good..

I hear the tune and fixing that restrictive intake does a lot for these cars, obviously the pulley too. I raced what I am assuming was a stock ZL1 the other day in my Z28 (bolt ons) and it was pretty even, I was disappointed with its performance, I was expecting him too beat me badly...

Some people needed to be pointed to the obvious. It's been a decade+ long *** rape on Furd. Finally they were able to do something about it and the GM design team helped them by making the 5th gen ridiculously heavy.

my car is a week old and still has factory oil in it.. I call it Gt500 slayer because thats the idea behind the build. I wanted a baseline ON THE STREET to see how a stock auto car would hold up against a fairly proven driver( they are more rare than the cars themselves by far) in a gt500.

it is a auto car and he has had his car for about 2 months.. he went 11.87 at 125 at gateway after he got it. Gateway is closed now but i dont need no stinkin timeclocks..

there was NO light between us.. my front bumper was at his back window. he did have mph on me but it was not enough to run past me like people make it out to be.. im sure if we went roll racing he would have beat me by a couple cars, but what retards going to give him that race ..lol

I can EASILY say with just a air cleaner and a ported inlet or JUST A SET OF 20" drag radials i would have beaten him by a good margin.

DONT BE SCARED my brothers!

people get too wound up. These things havnt been around long enough. If the tune in them is around what I think it is, like no timing (they have to cover their ***), Just a tune could make big power. I know 1 or 2 degrees on a boosted motor turns out pretty big power diff.

Im an avid racer at my local strip and have yet to see any gen 5 camaro come close to running anything respectable. The only Zl1 ive seen was owned and driven by a well known shop here and was running 12.60s with a cat back and DRs, the same day my buddies 13' 5.0 was running 12.80s at only 2mph less.

im just stepping into the LS market so im here to learn and contrubute. Im not a ford/chevy/dodge/nissan blue blood anything im a car guy and i can appreciate anything well put together. Too many guys are butthurt that ford is seruiously outgunning the general now (as was not the case for a very long time). But what kills me these guys are defending these cars and dont own one or ever have plans to!

Update, I am impressed that at least one ZL1 owner persevered and went 11.9 bone stock, there is one guy on camaro5.

Modded, I'm impressed with ZL1 that has little done to it to run 10.9's. And I'm not talking a cam, shouldn't need a cam to run that good.
