Thanks

That be like me making fun of you for buying a 4,000lb Camaro when I paid the same for my 3,100lb C6.

He's right.
The new Camaro is a PIG.

What make me laugh is some people are dumb enough to believe the marketing of 4,000lb car built on a sedan chassis as a sports coupe. It isn't.

I love the new Zeta platform (Camaro & G8) with 4 doors, huge interior, and a massive trunk.
But, I hate it as a coupe and it will never compete with a Corvette for sport or a G8 for practicality.

I don't think people are dumb for liking the car, it is what it is. Heavier than people would like, yes, but still the best bang for the buck out there. Many of us want something different, not another 4 door sedan. I love the G8, but 95% of people will never notice it, the Camaro is sure to get noticed everywhere you go.

Your logic doesn't really make any sense, you are comparing the weight of a $49k 2 seat sports car to that of a $31k 4 seat coupe. Compare the mustang to the camaro and you will see that the camaro is not that much heavier for what you get, under 300lbs difference. The camaro has heavier tires, transmission, suspension, and more safety crap than the mustang so as ford upgrades the weight difference will shrink.

Again, look at the price point, add up the drivetrain the Camaro comes with, and tell me how they could afford to take more weight out of it, which will not happen cheaply.

Using prices for the brand new Camaro where demand is very high and supply is low distorts the comparison, especially considering the excess supply of Corvette's right now.

I don't know what tires were on it. I am no track expert but you could tell he has not been down the track to many times.

The Camaro is not supposed to compete with a Corvette, nor the G8.

I'm a fellow Camaro lover, and find the 1969 Camaro to arguably be the best looking American car ever. I think GM nailed the new Camaro VISUALLY. I understand and appreciate the Camaro passion and wanting to support GM. But, I will not accept a 4,000lb sedan chassis as a coupe.

Heavier than people would like, yes,
I agree.

but still the best bang for the buck out there.
I think a 98-02 F-body and the C5, and are BOTH a much better "bang-for-buck"
Many of us want something different, not another 4 door sedan.
Whether you want to admit it or not, the Camaro IS a sedan (Zeta) with none of the G8's utility and ALL of it's weight.

I love the G8, but 95% of people will never notice it, the Camaro is sure to get noticed everywhere you go.
I'm not going to comment on people who buy cars to get noticed. I'll self moderate.

Your logic doesn't really make any sense, you are comparing the weight of a $49k 2 seat sports car to that of a $31k 4 seat coupe.
I bought my 1st brand NEW C6 for $39.9.

Compare the mustang to the camaro and you will see that the camaro is not that much heavier for what you get, under 300lbs difference.
Uhhh, 300lbs is HUGE for curb weight. .

The camaro has heavier tires, transmission, suspension, and more safety crap than the mustang so as ford upgrades the weight difference will shrink.
The Camaro weighs 4,000lbs because it's on the G8 chassis. The 4th gen has the same trans and engine. Yes, safety and rear added a little weight, but look at the Terminator Mustang whose indy rear didn't add that much weight.

Using prices for the brand new Camaro where demand is very high and supply is low distorts the comparison, especially considering the excess supply of Corvette's right now.
I bought my C6's close to invoice near the height of the market.

I think they did a good job with the car except for the weight. To me it's a muscle car, some may look at it as a sports car. But either way, whatever you want to use it for, the weight is a serious detriment to performance. Be it straight line or the curves. I haven't done the math but I'm willing to bet if it lost 7 - 800 lbs it would run mid 12's no problem at the current power level. With today's technologies and materials they should have been able to build this car to be at least slightly lighter than the 4th gens. And it's not like they didn't have plenty of time for design and development. My car already feels heavy to me. Not saying I will never buy one but it would be more appealing to me if it were lighter than the car I already have.

Well, when I talk about bang for the buck, I mean in a car available new today. And my point about "getting noticed" was that it is a unique car that I think is a great combination. It doesn't matter what other people think to me, I will buy what I like. But if a lot of people think it is an awesome looking car and they want to buy it then I think that bodes well for the cars future (and to some extent GM's). Otherwise we would all have to drive Mustangs or G8's (or Corvettes since they are so cheap).

As for the price, I am just comparing current base prices, in a year or so similar deals will be available on the Camaro. I realize this car is a much less capable drag car than the last generation camaro, but all these enthusiasts weren't enough to keep it around despite its suitability for drag racing, so I would rather have it like it is than not at all.

As for the platform, a sedan has 4 doors, so I don't really understand the point, we all know it is based off the G8 chassis. So? We probably wouldn't have the car at all without it.

Oh and the Camaro weighs 3850lbs, not 4000, so since 300 lbs is HUGE in curb weight, 150lbs is at least half of HUGE, so stop rounding up the numbers to make it more dramatic. And the C6 curb weight is 3220, so you are underestimating that by over 100 lbs as well.

Man this thread is full of it! Christ!

Are you people really getting bent out of shape because someone doesnt like what you have? Wow...

I'm glad some of you have more money then brains and spend a lot of it to make up for your parents not giving you enough attention as a child or for your physical deficiencies...

I also cant believe some of you that would sit here and talk **** about the new car. I may not like the way it looks the best, but you cant beat the drive train (except for the IRS part). You guys are really going to get disappointed when a stock car breaks at the track? 10 bolt never had a great rep either.

Personally, I wouldn't spend that much money on a car for myself unless it was old and I was building a big freaking motor.

Whatever...charlie mike.

The new camaro doesnt have the looks I wanted (WS6) but its built like a tank, handles well and doesnt rattle like a tin can..

In terms of value 02-04 Z06 everything else is mute

Is a 425hp LS3 SS that much faster than a stock 4th gen F-body elite (SS/WS6), or does the extra weight make the numbers close?

depends who you ask...

ask someone with a close to stock 4th gen, or an ignorant/dumb person... yea they are about dead even with the 4th gen having the advantage in most races...

ask someone who is not "threatened" by the 5th gens speed... no.. the 4th gen doesnt come close... the 5th gen will hit 12.4s stock, just give it time... people are comparing it to the 12.8 that ONE fbody did after people had time to learn the cars do it at the right time of the year and break in miles...
right now your seeing 12.8s out of cars that people dont know how to drive have no break in miles and just came out..
with CAI exhaust tires they will be knocking on 11s... tune will put them in the 11s... dont believe me, just sit back and watch..

o yea, almost forgot... the 5th gen is doing this while carrying an extra 600 or so lbs...

it is a LOT better car...leaps and bounds better.. better built, nicer, more quality parts, looks better, handles better, accelerates better, killer brake setup, etc etc etc....

EDIT::: in short.. 4th gen average- 13.3-13.6 5th gen average- now- 12.8-12.9 in 6 months- 12.5-12.6 they are almost a full second quicker.. just give it time..

btw..... dont call it a ram air model an fbody "elite"

all ls1s run about the same time... the ram air models are no faster than the base models..

I agree. There are always going to be some haters out there because they own "the other car". You see it on this site with a couple of LS1 owners that think the LT1 is garbage. My brother owns a 1989 Turbo Trans am and always talks **** he has the fastest/best T/A made...But he won't run me.

I'm gonna agree with the above. But, the new Camaro's weight KILLS it for me.
Bottom Line:
Why would you buy a 5th Gen Camaro when you can buy a 5th Gen Corvette or G8?
