Besides, anything with an SS badge now is better than some of the lame, anemic pieces of SShit they produced in late 70s and 80s. you mean i get cheesy polyester/plastic interior AND a 170hp 350? awesome!

Seems the thread is divided with people who agree with me and who agree with you. We'll just have to leave it at that. You keep taking oddball options and particular years with special options etc to make your point. My point was simply the Z28 was built to race AS IS, and the 302 was killer. The SS was not.

Ah yes, the grand ole Z28-vs-SS debate. I love it.
Sure, SS was the top dog in the 4th Gen, but it wasn't always.
Perhaps back in the day the SS led the way in "rated horsepower" but that means squat.
Line up a 1st Gen Z28 and a 1st Gen SS and see what happens, you may be surprised.
That 302 was one of the most under-rated engines ever.
The 1st Gen SS was designed to be the street cruiser.
Loaded up with options and accessories, all the gadgets and gizmos you could want, all the fancy details to make it look good, and a big motor and big power number to go with it.
The 1st Gen Z28 was designed to be the race car.
Low optioned, lightweight, and a small block with a crapload of power.
IMO, there really was no "king"
SS was king of the street, Z28 was king of the race track.
Add in this fact too... of the 36 Camaro model years:
- SS was available in 13 model years
- Z28 was available in 34 model years
Any Chevy can be as SS, but only a Camaro can be a Z28.
As for the answer... what will happen in the 5th Gen?
Well my friends, we're gonna have to wait and see.
But I can assure you this: either way, it's gonna kick ***.

I was waiting for OctaneS. . .er I mean OctaneZ28 to show up. My point in the beginning was simply to show that 4th gen ideals were not the standard in the past. To think you know what it would mean to go retro and hold true to the car's heritage, you have to know what retro might really mean and not base an opinion simply on 4th gen standards.

the original poster said Z-28 > all other camaros, the IROC-Z was an upscale options package on top of a Z-28. there was no 4th gen IROC which means 3rdgen > 4th gen, LS1Tech tells me that LS1 = God, and LS1s were only installed in 4th gens.
Therefore I deduct that IROC-Zs > God. Sorry, the math doesnt lie.

In order for you to get the International Race Of Champions (IROC) option, you had to have the "top of the line Camaro"... the Z28

I hope it's like it was in the First Gen years, with the Z28 being such a purpose-driven car. Give it a bare-bones stripper option with the meanest engine and the tightest suspension. Give a matte/satin black finish or whatever you want to call it as an option. How about manual streering option too? I mean, damn, look at the Challenger. They did it, why cant we? I don't want to lust for a Challenger. I want the new Camaro to be my dream car (because if I really wanted to, I can afford one now).

Never seen a COPO Z28 before, wonder why those COPO cars are the top dogs on the auction blocks and I see a ton of them with SS badges on them. It all comes down to engines, the original Z28, which I have actually driven, was a lighter, strung out and high winding 302 from the destroked 327. The mountain motors came in the SS's, and it made them faster, but nose heavy and not quite as nimble as the Z28's. SOOOOOO
Nose heavy Blown straight line Camaro=SS
Lighter NA smaller motor=Z28
There is the heritage. Saying the Z28 was top dog is a matter of opinion. Just because you could have a base 327 SS trim package does not negate the fact that the big blocks and the COPO cars were SS's. And the Z28 was not faster that the 375 horse 396. I have sat in these cars as a kid when family memebers would line up in them.
