Default Z28 Confirmed Canceled by GM

Left Lane News

Confirmed: GM says “there will be no Z28 model” Camaro
July24 2008

Earlier this month, several reliable sources told Leftlane the Z28 Camaro program at GM had been cancelled. Despite a backlash from Camaro fan clubs claiming the sources must be wrong, a GM executive on Monday officially confirmed what we already knew. “There will be no Z28 model,” said Chevrolet product manager Cheryl Pilcher in a newly published interview.

“Through the four generations of Camaro, there have been cases where Chevrolet chose to make the Z28 the top dog or the SS the top dog.” she told Automobile Magazine. Consistent with a renewed focus on the SS brand, GM has decided to give the top slot to the SS.

The Z/28 was set to feature the fire-breathing LS8 motor. A 6.2L, small block V8 with a roots-style supercharger that was supposed to be good for 500 to 550 horsepower. With the Z28 put out to pasture, the SS model will now be the top dog. In the Camaro Super Sport’s engine cradle, you’ll find the LS3 V8 rated between 400 and 422 horsepower, depending on transmission options.

Normally this is where we’d speculate on the reason for this move by GM, though, do we even have to say it? With gas prices so high and cost cutting a priority, GM was forced to make this tough decision.

WTF ....The end of the world is near...
A Camaro without a Z28 is un-american, it's like baseball without hot dogs, no apple pie, this is wrong

There WILL be a Z/28, but it might be a while. I wager they will see if they can make a profit off of the car first, and then release it as a special edition or something...

Maybe there will be a lightweight version called Z28 only weighing 3750 and having another 15 hp.

All jokes aside, we (myself included) really need to start supporting the car or we will NEVER see another Camaro ever. Most of the guys on here can fix these short falls and Im sure make a hell of a car out of what Holden supplies (is GM involved at all?). Someone really needs to start a SRA swap kit asap. That will save them 100-150lbs.

It really is a gorgeaous car in every way and detail.

Oh for the love of god. Are you stupid, Mustang guy? Come on. What Cheryl Pitcher actually said, as told by OctaneZ28, a Camaro Focus Group member -

Will there be a Z28 model?

CP: "There will be no Z28 model. Through the four generations of Camaro, there have been cases where Chevrolet chose to make the Z28 the top dog or the SS the top dog. As you're aware, Chevrolet is encouraging the SS strategy with cars such as the HHR SS and Cobalt SS. Consistent with this strategy, we have a Camaro SS."

Misquote of the century.

Here is Cheryl's actual response -

Ok, so there it is from the horses mouth - no Z28 at launch.
But that doesn't mean it'll never happen!

Sorry for being a bit rough with you, there, but I really am a bit tired of all the nay-saying and the baww-ing about the lack of a Z28. No harm done, no harm meant. Just, eh.. For REAL Camaro news, watch 5thgen.org.

Camaro is a flagship model of GM performance and its potential will always be unlimited. The odds of a camaro production without a Z/28 model is slim to none. There will be a camaro model to tower over the SRT8 and GT500 for the wealthy enthusiast as well as Bergers,Tom Henrys, and eventually im sure a ZL1. It will exist much in the same way that Ford has done with the Mustang the past few years with its new look.

Of course they're going to say there will be no Z28. If they said there is a possibilty of one, some people would hold out on purchasing a Camaro until the Z28 was available. If they say there's not going to be a Z28, then those same people will "settle" for the SS and will probably purchase sooner knowing nothing better will be released in the future. Then, if a Z28 does come out, those people will trade in their SS for a Z28. Two Camaros sold > one Camaro sold.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a Z28, but I'm putting my money on them releasing one in a year or two.

Thats a very good point. from a sales standpoint it is a very good move to not announce a z28 right now.

Thats exactly my thoughts.

People arent gonna strap down for an ls3 when they can get a blown motor with more ponies in a few years...... Think of all the corvette people who bought the last year of the ls2's........... then only to be dwarfed by having a standard ls3 in the next production year.

I'm gonna say late 2009/ early 2010 we'll see 602 z28's discreetly hit the lots

Or at least it would be cool as hell to see that happen.

There will be an LSA Camaro, they might not call it Z28 but GM has a surprise in store for the Camaro community and the competition.

Smart move for GM would be to see how the new car sells for the first two years.....see if it has stayability in the market. If the car is still hot after two years production, there's no way that a halo model won't be offered. I just wouldn't count on it for the first couple of years, at least. My bet is that they're gonna test the waters with the SS and see how things go. JMO.

LOL! Maybe they waill come out with a "Camaro LTZ". This thing has been smurfed since jump street. The names are horrible (Camaro LT & no Z28). Its a heavy terd
(3900). Regarding performance, a stock 4th gen will hang with the new SS.....somethings not right there. Maybe you guys will open your eyes when you see how much the SS terd will cost.

Well there goes my desire to have a 5th Gen. Guess I'll have to cram an LS8 in my 93'
