Don't get him a fast car for his first...its like tradition to drive a beater for a first car. Well mine is not exactly a beater...97 toyota landcruiser. I would get him a pos that he will learn to love such as a jeep or something. Then have him save up and get an ls1. It will take at least two years. I'm 18 now and I just recently bought my first ls1 and this was with my own money. I was in the same boat as a lot of people wanting a strong v8 for highschool that I almost bought a pos 99 ls1 camaro for $2000. Have him wait and save for it himself and he will really respect the car.

I've got a 99 ss and i'm 17 and it was my first car. never got a speeding ticket. As long as he is responsible and knows when to open it up and when not to he'll be alright.

Sure a 16 year old could handle either one of those cars, but maturity-wise it's not a wise decision. If I'd had a car like that when I was 16, I probably wouldn't be here to type this 18 years later.

Better option than the Dodge Vipers I saw at a high school the other day. In the student lot, with student tags.

Yea reminds me of High School when I graduated in 05, there was a brand new Vette in the student lot, pretty much the first C6 ive seen. Thing that got me P****ed off was that my Trans Am got voted #2 car in the whole schools parking lot. So if that chicks daddy didnt buy her a brand new vette I woulda been #1

But what really matters is the fastest car, and that woulda been my TA

There is a girl here with a convertible 05+ Corvette, there is also another chick that got a 2010 SS Camaro, totaled it a week later, not sure if it was her fault or not. She had a car cover on it in the school parking lot so I am sure she really loved it.

thats WAY to much car for a 16 year old, power and price wise

on the H.S topic, rockwall/heath is ridiculous. kids have hummers, escalades, challengers, corvette, its just stupid

I'm a driving instructor and always recommend my students buy something safe, good on gas, and junky. Looks don't matter for 16 year olds because they ARE going to beat the crap out of it and should save their money for a second car or what I call a "College/U car". A car that they want, wether it be pretty or sexy like my Formula.
But it's his money. Let him pick what he wants, a car is a convenience, but it's also an investment.

This threads been a scream, Im glad it was full of "spit and bile" as it was

Thank you guys for all chiming in, I think I've collected alot of opinions on what is reasonable to get for him

We are proboably going forth with the cobra, since I need a good rival and I truely believe he's responsible enough

My parents are forking it out for him, but it's his choice more or less. They gave me a dodge ram rumble bee truck that I wanted when I was 17... so i think they feel like they'll give us each ONE car we want as a freebie, treat it right or lose it pretty much

We will be test driving one soon, maybe taking one home in the next few weeks..

Will post up when/if

Pat
