Default Dyno tune or mail order for bolt ons

I have a mail tune from Frost now. I really like the tune. Shifts much better. In spring, I'm going to Speed Inc. for new gears. 3.73's. I was thinking of getting a dyno tune while I'm there. I'll be installing a LS6 intake and underdrive pully this winter. So I'll have all the bolt ons. Should I get the dyno tune or just keep the Frost tune? The car will be a bolt on car for awhile.

Can't beat a dyno tune.

^agreed. If the car is ever driven outside the track, drivability tuning will go way above a mail order tune.

Thanks guys! I wanted a dyno tune anyways. Plus I'll have some numbers to start with. Then I'll know how much I gain when I do heads and cam. But that will be a while. What does a a4 bolt on car put down? I'll have mods in sig plus LS6 intake, and underdrive pulley.

325ish... All depends on the dyno and tune though.

Whoa, now. Some misinformation being spread around in here. Sometimes dyno tuning is the worst tuning you can buy. Not to mention it always cost more than mail order.

The tuning regardless of mail order or dyno or whatever is only as good as the tuner. I've paid $300 a couple of time for dyno tunes that I now know were **** and I would feel bad charging a dime for them if it were my business.

This doesn't really apply to the OP because he is going to a reputable shop for potential dyno tuning, but it's almost guaranteed that you won't be getting your moneys worth tuning the few additional mods that you are getting. I don't know Speed Inc's pricing on the stuff but maybe just get a dyno and go from there, worry about tuning later.

in fairness i asked my mail order tune to be "street tune" i ended up with 13.8:1 A/F ratio, later i picked up 13 additional rwhp from a dyno re-tune.(now at 13.1:1) i suggest negotiating a tune for about $250. sometimes on car club dyno days they give you a break. also my mail order tune forgot to turn off my egr as requested.

If you don't know how to tune then you really don't know what you're getting from either. I've seen everything you just complained about from supposed reputable shops and dyno tuning, some of which still sponsor LS1tech.

I was assuming Speed Inc. could tune a simple bolt on car. Jon is correct though. I know Frost has done quite a few tunes. Is it perfect? No, but no tune is. I am not doubting Frosts tuning abilities, but I would hope that a performance shop with a name like Speed Inc. has made for itself can tune a car better on a dyno than Frost could with just you telling him your mods.

If it was "joe blow" dyno tuning your car, I would say stick with Frost.... But it isn't.

as far as dyno #'s: my car has full bolt ons except the pulley and it put down 344 rwhp and 360 rwtq. on a dynojet. it is also an auto. I also went the dyno route.

Yeah, fear not. Speed Inc. does fantastic work. They don't take short-cuts with anything and I couldn't be happier with how the car runs. My A/F is flat right at 13.05-13.2 the whole way.

As for power, through an auto with unknown miles...320-330whp

That's my point exactly. It could be completely half-assed but usually the WOT afr will be right by the dyno print out. I'm quoting someone (Greg Banish?) here that said "trained monkeys can tune WOT". Without really understanding how to tune you don't know what you're getting. But if you did know, it wouldn't matter about which shop is better because you would be doing it yourself.

Again that's not poking at Speed Inc at all. Just the overall concept that dyno tuning is always better.

I'd be happy with 320-330, for now. lol
The car has 52,200 miles on it.

I think it would be a waste of money to get a dyno tune if you're going to do heads/cam later on. A mail order tune will work just fine until then. I've been on one for over a year. I'll get a dyno tune when I swap the cam.
