Default L98 any good?

I have a chance to buy a new crate motor. It's the L98. Are these any good? I've never heard of this motor. Says it's a LSX. Any info would be great. Thanks!

L98 is the TPI 350 from the third gens and early C4's. They make awesome torque, but I wouldn't unless it was a smoking deal...not an LSX either.

It could be the 6.0 liter LS motor. Pretty easy to tell the difference. I doubt you could find a new 5.7 TPI L98.

You can practically buy any engine new as a crate motor. You're most likely right as I don't keep up on truck codes. I know LQ4, LQ9, L92, etc. but never knew L98 was one, although I'm not surprised by GM recycling codes.

If this is the case, then while technically not LSX, it's an iron block, subtle differences version of an LS2 and almost everything is interchangeable.

L98 is not a 6.0 truck motor. the L98 was a modified version of the L76 that was only used in Austraila.

This makes more sense. No wonder I had never heard of it. (L76 = 6.0 in G8 GT for anyone that is still confused.)

the L98 was in the Lumina SS and Caprice SS, as well as the Holden Commodore and other Holden models. the only difference is, the L76 has DOD and AFM, the L98 does not.

good info, makes me think we should have a list made into a sticky of all the relevant GM engines, codes, and applications.

we should have a lot of stickies here, if we had every sticky we needed, and everyone searched like they were supposed to, nobody would ever post.

In Australia, an L98 may very well be an LS based engine.

In Wisconsin, an L98 is a multi-port injected SBC. So ya, it's good. But it's no screamer.

I dislike the L76 because of DoD, and I dislike the L99 for the same reason.

However, the L98 sounds like a good motor. Any LSx without variable displacement is a good LSx.

And the old 5.7L TPI L98 was a great motor in it's day, tons of torque and enough power to finally bring some performance back to stock Corvettes and F-bodies in the mid-late '80s.

Yeah like said above the L98 is the manual trans version of the L76 so it has all the good parts minus the DOD. A simple cam swap with some headers and it should be a screamer.

I have an '86 C4 with an L98 + Doug Nash 4+3 transmission. I'm pulling it out to put in an LS2. The L98 and tranny have about 79k miles on them and run great. Shoot me a PM if you're interested.

AFM = Active fuel management

The new 1985 L98 added tuned-port fuel injection "TPI", which produced 230 hp (172 kW) and 330 lb·ft (447 N·m). It was standard on all 1985-1991 Corvettes
