I saw a pic of a cut away of the stock muffler on another forum and it wasn't a very good one so I decided to redo it. I just installed a Hooker Cat-Back and thought it would be very interesting to see just what is inside the stock muffler. Here is what I found.
First, I cut away the outside metal revealing a layer of fiberglass. This layer was only about an 1/8th to a 1/4" thick.

Under the fiberglass was another layer of metal.

Second I cut way the other layer of metal revealing the actual internals.

Good post, now I see why we picked up 38rwhp on my brothers cam only setup last weekend. With the cutout closed the car wouldn't make over 363 rwhp, first pull with the cutout open it made 401 rwhp. Stock Muffler = Massive Restriction

I was just thinking. Do you think this would be sticky worthy? I know a lot of people will probably reference people back to these photos to explain the restrictiveness of the stock muffler. Just wondering.

Sticky a good idea, with this info a data base could be constructed with the internal design of other mufflers. You could then see why some flow better and why some sound different. So many choices out there. Now I wonder what the inside of my slp DD looks like. I'm sure this info is all out on the web but to have it all in one place would be sweet, saying its not already a sticky.

That pic is consistent with what I've been told several times - the stock 2.75 inch pipe isn't the big power robber, it's the stock muffler, so if you want a cheap upgrade and can't afford a full catback, getting an aftermarket muffler is a great way to go.
