Default 2001 WS6 with LS6 block here

So yesterday I pulled the engine out of my 2001 WS6 Trans Am for a rebuild due to a blown head gasket. I found the Block casting number and looked it up for the hell of it and found that it was an LS6 block. For those that dont know(im sure a lot of you do) some of the 2001 and 2002 Trans Ams and Camaros had these blocks from the factory due to an excess amount of these blocks built for the Z06's. After doing some reading it looks like 10-15% of F-bodies got the LS6 block in 2001 and about 25% in2002.

im sure this is old news to most, but i found this to be pretty exciting. I know the internals and heads were all standard LS1 stuff, but i heard they got better rod bolts from the factory with the ls6 block. just wondering if this is true and what other differences there might be between the two. Also wondering if cars that came with these are worth a little more money in current day.

It doesn't mean much, there are no major advantages to having the LS6 block.

Stronger internals, the major difference was the top end.

Op, if you have a ls6 intake and 243 heads, then you are a lucky bastard!

How would there be a difference in top end and internal strength? He's talking about the run of cars that got the LS6 block, not an entire LS6 motor.

Yes that is a good thing. Many people think it is the same as a ls1... it is not. It is stronger, better top end, and you can shift it more reliable at higher rpm's. I got one in mine two i figured out. Good for us right

The block is stronger because of the slightly different materials used and the process in which they made them in the Mexico plant. Other then that the internals are the same as any other LS1 and they still used the 241 heads and 01 and 02 cars had LS6 intakes anyways. The only thing I heard other then that is they have different rod bolts.

I didnt start this thread to create any arguments. Im just trying to verify a few things as I just found out that I have one of the cars with the LS6 block, which I thought was pretty cool and seems to be rare...

Thanks

not much to add other than whats been said lol. the ls6 blocks are made out of slightly better aluminum, and have better oil passages and cylinder bay breathing to make it more friendly to high rpm revs but there is no hp difference. and as for the rod bolts. all ls1 engines in 01 started getting the upgraded rod bolts no matter if it had a ls1 block or ls6 block.
