Default Winter Projects and Build Plans

Not sure about everyone else but winter is here at Summit Racing in Ohio. We have already had our first snowfall. What winter projects do you have lined up? Any build plans or ideas you’re thinking about? Maybe this year you're going to enjoy some downtime and get back on your project once it warms back up?

For those fortunate enough that don’t get snow, do you have an off-season or are you enjoying your cars year-round?

I just completed a move to a new-to-me-house, so my only winter project this year will be trying to get the new garage organized before it's too cold (might be too late already). Even finding the tools to do a basic oil change is difficult right now. I was just lucky to get the cars moved and fueled up with Stabil before winter. The weather here has already been in the single digits with plenty of snow, the roads are still a mess with salt. Looking forward to getting back to hobby related activities in the spring though.

Thanks for sharing RPM WS6. It is exciting getting to have a new garage. What isn't exciting is all of the actual moving and organizing. We are interested to see what others have going on.

Strongly debating whether to leave the car as-is and see how far I can push it next year, or start swapping things out now.

The old angel on one shoulder and devil on the other adage. That is a struggle we all deal with at points with our projects.

An LS swap into a 64 C10 is a nice combo. With upgraded brakes, suspension, and a T-56 that would be a fun cruiser.

Replacing an LS1 shortblock with an LQ4 shortblock. Previous owner spun a bearing. Getting all new ball joints, bushings, brakes, etc while it's all apart too.

My winter project (on the 'bird, anyhow) is going to be a full on teardown type detail job of the interior, undercarriage, and disassembling, stripping, and polishing the fm5's. I was wanting to do h/c/i over the winter, but one of the turbo companies just released an "aps style" twin kit and a guy with a YouTube channel ordered one for his build and I'm going to see how his goes, and order one come spring/early summer if his kit/build goes well. So to keep busy through the winter I'll just do a high level detail job on everything else, and maybe a few bushings/tie rod ends or something.

I got a new Miller TIG welder so I plan to use it to fab up a new 3" exhaust on my Camaro and possibly convert to flex fuel.

I have a long list of things to do in the upcoming months. So far in this cold season I have installed my p1sc-1 procharger kit and redone most of my fuel system, which should be good for about 800whp. I currently have umi/viking coilovers waiting to go on. Then the plan is to get a cage in the car, get some aluminum seats (or at least one for the driver), get a decent drag pack together, and possibly do a mcleod rxt clutch and a QT bellhousing. Definitely a lot of money involved, so we will see.

Aside from that, I am hoping I can convince my dad to LS swap his already sbc powered '38 Ford Coupe. It's already got a 9" and th350 and it weighs practically nothing. A 5.3 with some ebay wutang war whistles should really wake it up.

Either way, there will be a lot of parts being ordered from Summit! I live about 40 minutes from the Ohio location, so I try to buy from there when I can.

Goal for the winter is to get the car to fire and move under its own power. LQ4/T56 in a BMW E46 coupe. Need to plumb the trunk mounted fuel cell, finish off the wiring and install the mountain of parts sitting in my garage. Fortunately I have a newly built, heated garage to work in as well as a wife that told me the car is gone if it's not "complete" in 2020 (had this project underway for a few years now). Challenge accepted...

Pulling a ls1/t56 combo out of an 02 camaro to put in my 71 Camaro
Putting a 1 piece drive shaft in the GTO and a trans service while im at it
Changing the power steering pump on the Blackbyrd
finish parting out the 02 camaro to make space for the 71

Reality might get the motor and trans out....might

Finished installing a new rear end and suspension, went to go do spark plugs and wires. Found oil all over the plugs, failed leak down on the rings. Borescoped the cylinders found excessive scoring on the walls. Went ahead and started building the engine from the bottom up (which was not really my intention so early on with this car with a "built" motor). As it stands right now Ls2 block darton sleeves, dragonslayer crank, manley rods and turbo tuff pistons, Mamo NFI 235 heads MUCH bigger cam and trying to get it in started seat the rings (as much as I can since its already snowing here), entire valve train redone. And hope for better luck next year!
