Default Gauges or Gages

I noticed on my car yesterday that is says check gages i thought it was spelled gauges i guess gm wanted to save one letter

haha i just thought it was funny that when it came on my buddies said hey man you car spells things wrong and then i actually looked it up and gages is an alternate to gauges

Both spellings are correct. When you are talking about the size of cable, gauge is the typical way it is spelled. When you are talking about inspection equipment gage is the typical spelling. I came across this years ago when I became the Divisional Gage Designer for a large automotive supplier. Most engineers are great at math but can't spell worth a **** that is what I figured, but ten years later I still haven't found out for sure. Thats my two cents, I have to go design more gages.
