6-qts with a regular filter...something to think about
I was concerned a bit when I put 6qts in with the regular filter and the oil was here add---->XXXX<----*full
(oil level prepresented by "*")
Hrmmm....the pan is meant to hold 5.5 qts with stock filter, right? Well...
Who the hell needs oil in a motor anyways? None of them come like that...until it gets put in the car and you want to actually turn it over! Sooo
I cranked the car and checked hte oil (cold, warm I expect a slightly bit more oil draining back, but nothing catestrophic).
The oil was here with the car running at idle:
add---->XXX*X<----full
interesting. I had about 5.2qts or so (static equivalent) still in the pan/filter area.
All you guys who run 5qts to "reduce windage" (Even at static levels with 7qts and stock filter the crank will not touch oil) This means you have around 4-4.2 qts of oil in your pan/filter with your engine IDLING ON LEVEL GROUND!
Take a corner or accelerate or rev it up and I don't want to think about it.

everyday a new random tread... man, just get out a DRIVE the damn car and stop bitching/worrying about every damn thing that "could" be amiss or have the slightest worry about it. maybe the car is acting up because shes lonely and not getting enough attention. follow the owners manual on how much oil to put in there and drive it... simple.

With 5.5 qts I see why we have all these "spun bearing" threads. A LOT! of LS1's lose 1qt per 3K mile change interval. If I have 5.2 qts in my oil pan with 6 qts, then you will have 4.7qts with 5.5 qts. If you use 1 qt of oil you will have 3.7 qts IDLING ON LEVEL GROUND in your pan...now take a corner at 5K rpm...
...make more sense now?

Have you seen where the pick-up tube end/grill is located in the pan? Its at the lowest point, the motor is still recieving plenty of oil with the suggest 5.5 total at idle, and I think it would be very hard to take a corner at 5,000 RPM's, by the time you are coming out of the apex your back on the gas and heading back straightish, not approaching it. However if your going that hardcore in an F-body, maybe a dry sump setup should be fabbed/used? All that said, I always use 6 qts for usage reasons.

This has been addressed before about the oil pickup being starved during hard autox causing spun bearings. The solution was either dry sump, or simply run more oil. Hence why people run 6 qt and the larger filter.
Not all LS1 cars burn 1qt/3k.
I've burnt next to nothing, almost refilling 6 bottles of GC after an 8k interval.

I don't use a full qt either. Nor do I auto-X. HOWEVER! I had seen a LOT! of threads on here recently about 6qts causing windage and how some people run 5qts to reduce it. I figured my experience/observation would put a few minds at ease. I guess not

If people think your oil level is high, mine is at "OP" in operating on the dipstick

I use the regular filter and I put in 6 quarts to be on the safe side. If you are the type of person that wants to follow the manual to the "T" then you will be fine as long as you check the oil level on a regular basis. Just use common sense. Sharp turns and hard launches shouldn't affect the motor unless the oil level is low.

Never have I heard of a story where someone spun a bearing running 5.5qts(recommended).
Dont hear all you believe. We have had this convo before bro.
I would believe the engineers that designed the motor, other than someones opinion on the internet. Run the recommended amount, and call it a day.

I always use 5.75-6 quarts myself, with a stock sized filter. Never caused a problem, so I will continue to do so.

I just changed my oil and put in 6QT's and it was at the full line? I was confused cause I could have sworn it took 5 1/2 quarts. I don't remember how much most cars use anyways since I work at jiffy lube ( ) and I have so many different oil amounts in my head
