I love my F-body, but I'm really conflicted about fixing it up. My 98 Z28 is worth about $3.5K as is and it's going to take about $9K to do everything I want to do. It needs a new interior, paint and some body work. Plus new tires and a stereo. I was raped on the interest when I bought the car due to bad credit, but I didn't care at the time...I had to have it. It's been a daily driver for 5 years now and has 120K miles on it. I've taken good care of the engine, but due to unfortunate circumstances, the body and interior has suffered. I really want to put some love into it because I have so much money invested into it just paying it off ($15K for the car + $8K interest). Plans for now...

TT2's & tires - $1,400
SS hood - $500
Suspension mods - $750
Interior - $2k
Stereo system - $1,500
Fix dents and new paint - $2,500

Should I put $9K into a car worth $3k? That's not even getting started on the engine. Thoughts?

If you are planning on keeping it, like forever, I say invest the $9k and get it exactly how you want it.
But if your worried about loosing money on the resale or something, then yea, get a new one....

if you want a car for an investment...you picked the wrong year of fbody...if your hobby is playing with cars then play with what you currently have...there really isnt too much of a price change between 98-02 unless it is low milage...if you do trade it in for a newer one....by the time you pay that one off if you take a loan for it...youll be back in the same boat...i say play with the one you already have...

I'd sell it and wait around for a nice deal. If you know what mods you want you can possibly find one with some of what you want already done at almost no extra cost to you. When people sell modded cars they only get a fraction of the cost back from what they put into it. In your case you could be the guy on the other end of that deal if your patient.

I'm now wishing I would have done that but I actually paid a premium for a 100% original car. A lot of people will not buy a heavily or even mildly modded car. I passed over a few with similar miles with cams/heads/exhaust/suspension/tuned and for similar money. I just didn't know much about these cars at the time and what to look for. I know I just wanted something that looked like my RS with the t-tops but faster.

Is it paid off? If not put that 9k into that and sell it then start over (you don't want to be paying a payment on a car that you don't have anymore). However if its paid off do what you want with it. A word of warning though, when you set out to spend X amount of dollars, you usually spend alot more.

just keep it....you don't have to do everything at once...do it slowly and make it fun...maybe put some rims on it and then make it a little faster so you enjoy the car again and then move on.

if i were u, i'd buy a decent dd and finish gutting the interior rather than spending 2k on it, and make it a lightweight race car. put all the money u were going to spend on interior, stereo, and paint, and put it into like a nice h/c package with full bolt ons and a tune, and have a bare bones, really fast street/strip car.

it keep it. the stereo you can live with out. get the suspension and body work done. your car will handle and feel like new. you can get new carpet and steam clean the seats for cheap. then go for what your heart desires next. you wont want a car payment.

if you do decide to get rid of it, dont put any money into it. sell it as is, or part it out. like what was said, you wont get any money out of it. or turn it into a race only car and start to gut it. put on some sticky tires and spray that thing till something blows. have fun with it. just my .02 cents

Just keep it, 120K ain't **** to these cars. I bought my 98 with 104K and it passed a heavy inspection by my uncle at the dealership with flying colors. Only things wrong with it were the shocks, window motor and the rear hatch struts. He said the compression test showed all cylinders were well within spec for the amount of miles it had. Now it has 114K with several mods and beats without a skip
