Default Where did Chevy get Z28 from?

Where or why did Chevy come up with Z28 as the name for a model of Camaro?

Chevy has always had different names for different models starting with "z" the trucks performance package is z71 the clavier package is z24 (I think) corvette has the z06, and the camaro z28, they had a z montecarlo back in the early 90's but I think that was discontinued for the ss model....

correct me if I'm wrong guys

It was the rpo code for the performance package or whatever. If you look at your rpo listing you'll see Z28

its just an RPO code (a code so GM can look at it and tell everything a car has). another example of a RPO code is LS1 (a motor code). Z28 is a special suspension package RPO code. it started out as a trans am series based car and suspension, so it handled really well. then later it became so well known that they just made the top camaro the Z28. WS6 is a Pontiac RPO code for special suspension also..

my car is a B4C car.. its a special service package (police) RPO code. but by looking at all your RPO codes you can find out if the car has power windows, mirrors, locks, if it has side moulding, if it has factory tinted windows on and on.. each thing has its own RPO code. Z28 just happens to be the most famous one.

It was a continuation of the Z34 Lumina.

There was also the Z26 Beretta which was badged GT before hand.

Back in 1966 (ish), the camaro SS was under the RPO code Z27. The Z28 was just the next RPO in the series. (Popular hotrodding this month)

It's ashame that gm didn't continue the z28 legacy the right way. Instead if you wanted better handling and better looks you had to order an SS. Us z28 guy's got screwed. To me I feel all we got was just a plain jane camaro with 3 stupid z28badges and a v8. If it wasn't for the dual tailpipes and the badging you couldn't tell by looking at the car if it even had a V8 in it. The least they could've done is give us a little bit better hood ,instead of the ugly flat thing , 17"wheels, and some better shocks and springs. Just leave most of the luxury options for the SS models.

that was the reason for the SS name as in the top dog. I actually prefer the name Z28 over the SS though

I prefer Z28 also, GM just turned into a rather bland performance package. It's funny because we have a 77 z28(needs major work) and the hood on that is what comes on the 98-02 SS camaros. Well, not that exact hood obviously but the hood scoop is basically the same minus the fact that on 4th gens it actually works.

same here man... not bashing on the SS's, but, i see *alot* more SS's floatin around - both on this website and back in my hometown - so it makes me feel a lil bit better that i got an RPO code thats a bit less..........popular? i mean, for crying out loud - how many clowns have u run into that automatically think that since ur z28 isnt an SS that it must be slow, thus providing a much better chance for them to beat u in their civic?

just makes the victory that much sweeter

+1 and someone in a stock SS looks down at you until you show them that in comparison to your Z their ss should stand for "So SLow" I love pulling next to some old man who bought a SS or a Vette and thinks cause i'm in a Z that i'm slow.hahaha just makes their faces that much funnier when I run on em

yea people get the assumtion that cause i got a Z28 im not as fast an SS or a WS6 , they ask what mods i got i tell them, then they just come back well he has bolt-ons and its an "SS" so hes gonna beat u. i get it all.

"ur Z28 is geared diffrently" lol yea i got 3.73's
"ur Z28 doesnt have the ram air hood" lol i have the cold air induction from SLP
"ur Z28 doesnt have the same engine as a SS" lol i have heads & cam

it goes on forever. i learned ur never gonna shut them up, so i just stay quiet now, i let my "Z28" do the talking

i dont get so much from other F-Body owners, but mustang owners that try and set-up races for me, or a old guy w/ an SS or WS6 or C5 or Z06

some people just dont get it

These are the guys who arent enthusiasts and do not know what these cars are capable of. They dont realize that by birth the SS IS a Z28! Its amazing how stupid people can be.

If only some of those SS guys(the stupid ones that is) only knew that they only have a glorified Z28. They would probably **** themselves and sell their cars. It kinda makes me mad, Ford guys have a deffinate differance between a GT mustang and a Cobra. There's really almost no comparison between the 2. The Cobra obviously wipes the floor up with the GT. But for the camaro guys you have your pick of Z or SS. No reall difference in hp, just looks and maybe some handling if you ordered a fully optioned SLP SS. So I guess we have to just suck it up and make the best of what we got.

AAAAHHHHH yessss the curse of the Z28. The ss looks down on you, the ws6, the gto (ls1 and ls2) and of course all vets. lol I will never forget win a friend of mine said he could believe a SS can run a 13.8 stock but NEVER a Z28!(we are no longer friends )

Z28 is what's called an RPO Option number, like Z71. Z28 is our corporate code for how to identify Regular Production Options. And Z28 is the RPO Code for "Special performance Package". So they just called the car a Z28. Like most people (including myself) refer to our pickup truck as a Z71....when in all actuallity it's a Sierra with a Z71 option. Get it?
