Default Need to settle a Top Speed argument

I was talking with some of the guys in my unit(US ARMY).We were discussing what the top speed of my car would be.I told them it is around 155 mph for the LT1 Camaro. They told me that it was impossible and that no car built in American can have that kind of top speed because of federal laws. They were claiming it is probaby governed at about 115 mph.I told them yeah if I had the 115 MPH speedo with the H-rated tires.I was hoping you guys could back me up with some hard facts so I would have something to show them to prove their ignorance with American performance cars.I even asked them ok,what about the Z06 Vette and the Viper? They claimed that magazine test...ie(motor trend, road and track,etc..)eliminate the computer governed top speed before they perform top speed test.Is it just me or am I working with complete idiots(lol).

For an LS1 F-body, the governed limit is 162 mph if your car was optioned with Z-rated tires from the factory.

They told me that it was impossible and that no car built in American can have that kind of top speed because of federal laws.
They are 100% wrong.

Although the 4th gen F-bodies were assembled in Canada, the Corvette is assembled right in the heart of the USA (Bowling Green, KY), and their top speed is even faster than the F-bodies. Not to mention, my 3rd gen 350 TPI F-body had no probelm reaching 140mph, and it was assembled in Van Nuys, CA.

That is crap my Mach 1 is limited at 150 and it was built in Dearborn Michigan also check out this article comparing the 87 GT and IROC http://www.stangbangers.com/87_Musta...-Z_Article.htm and the top speed of both cars which are built in America is just under 150.

No you are working with complete idiots. My Vette tops out at 190+ and the TA has been up in the 150's before, so they dont know what they are talking about. Dont understand why people would be in denial about things like this.

I agree with the others I've had my car well above 120 several times.
And if the Government was going to mandate a top speed for all US built cars wouldn't it be the National speed limit of 70 MPH

70 isnt the highest speed limit in the US if you're gunna argue that point... I've been on roads in TX that were 80mph, and if i am not mistaken out in montana there are some roads that have no limit as long as conditions allow, or at l;east they used to be that way

but on the governed speed thing, i had my 97 z28 up to 160

Well considering that is my old car, I know for a fact that it will do every bit of the 155mph speedo. I only did it once to see if it would though

I did 145 bone stock with tops off and windows down.

Lots of cars have their gov set over 115. The gov is in place for the safety of the car, a lot of cars are capable of exceeding their gov limiter but the rest of the car isn't up to par for that speed.

Take my GTP for example, from the factory the gov is set to 126, at that point you are about in the middle of 3rd gear or somewhat close to the top, no sweat for the engine, but how does the suspension on it all hold up? It was a family car designed with a little pep, not for any top speed races. I myself have had mine to 115 and that is the furthest I have taken it, anything over that it starts feeling a bit floaty on 170k miles stock suspension.

I know there used to be no speed limit in Montana cuz some girl at a family renunion told me they went 90 through Montana, but since then I think they have put up some kind of speed limit, like you said, depending upon the conditions.

I've also hit 145 with tops off and windows down. It was really no sweat for the car. I hit it in far less than a mile....downhill though
