I went with paper just because it fit under the lid so much better. And I think its easier to throw it away and buy a new one rather than to clean it and run the risk of screwing your MAF up if you put to much oil on it.

it seems like a negligible difference in HP, with paper cleaning better, but what I'm concerned with is water. does the oil in the K&N protect against water(any better than paper) if you debaffle and seal your hood?

No, I know its not the same but think about a coffee filter, they still allow water to flow easily. I don't think there is a safe way to run a debaffled hood if it is raining too much. After the filter becomes wet and still has water hitting it, water will just go through.

Well I run the Powershot with my lid sealed to my hood. Just got an oil analysis back and not one bit of silicone. This is on a 10,000 mile change. Not sure about the K&N but the Powershot filters fine. I drive in the rain and have the lid sealed so do not want to use paper.

Honestly I think the silicone in the oil is more from people who don't have their lids sealed tight.

Silicon is what you should be interested in.
