'98 LS1 with 175k miles...go for it?
hey guys i'm new to the board, and dont have a car yet. but ive been keepin my eyes peeled on various classifieds and ive found a red '98 Z28 with M6 and T-tops and its got 175,000 miles. the guy is asking $3,000 for the car. from the pics online the car looks good. the guy says its only had synthetic oils in it. is the mileage too high for it to still be a reliable DD, or should it still be good to go? keep in mind im a college student, and my budget for a new dd is within $7k so it would leave me with $4k extra which i could either slowly put into mods or more importantly use the money to get through school. im hopin to get the vin from the guy so ill run a carfax on it as well. eventually i really like to have a 400-450rwhp dd, would T-tops compromise the strength much? would a cage be necessary with t-tops to maintain strength? what do you guys think?
i appreciate the help guys. if some of my questions have been answered many times before i apologize, im just a noob thanks

That's a lot of miles for something you are gonna mod. Keep saving your money, cause it won't last long. $4k is gonna go fast when you start with the mods with a car that high in mileage. Just buy it, drive it, and wait till it breaks to start doing anything to it. my .02

yea i figured 175k was a ton. but for $3k i had to ask and get opinions i guess it would be fine if i was planning to go through the motor, but i dont have that kind of money.
in regard to my other question...is 400-450 rwhp going to be a bad idea for t-tops w/o a cage or anything?

To answer one of your questions the answer is no you won't need a cage for 400-450 horse. If you want to strengthen the chassis subframe connectors are not expensive and will keep you from twisting up your doors... Also those cars are strengthened around the ttops so you'll be just fine. That is unless you decide to hook up some drag radials and launch it!

I wouldn't buy it. Look for something with lower miles and spend all 7k.
Going to school, you don't have the money for a 2nd car when this one blows the motor. You don't have a place to work on it. I'd buy something that will last for four years and not give you any trouble.

3k is a good price if the car is in good running condition despite the mileage. It should still go for at least 5k so it could be a good deal depending upon inspection of the car. I would buy it if it was me because 3k is nothing for a car like that, and you'd have plenty of extra money to repair any major failures if one was to occur. It's hit and miss with high mileage cars that's the risk of it, but sometimes it's worth it. If you like how it drives, you should buy it because that's a good price.
i was in the same boat as you and even with 175k miles my ls1 drives just fine, just make sure you inspect the car thoroughly before jumping into it too fast. You'll be able to tell if the car was maintained or not.

as long as the body is in nice shape i'd say go for it as well. The LS1 is a good engine and i'd bet that motor has another 100k miles left in it. As for the 6-speed he probably has more into it then he wants and just wants to get rid of it. First thing you do is drop that Flowmaster muffler. They are JUNK and the worst flowing you can get. I agree with the last poster that you shouldn't just jump into it though. look it over well and see if you notice any newer parts like water pump, alternators, battery, Power steering pump and the like. You can tell if they are newer then the rest by the way they look trust me. ~Cole~
