Whats with Chevy and the Z models?
What the heck does Z28, Z06, Z24, and Z71 stand for? And I saw a chevy avalanche yesterday with Z66 on it, WTF is that I know the Z71 is the off road package but what does the letter designation mean? Also whats WS6 stand for? Stupid noob question from a not so noob person.

Well those are codes for model options that GM ended up using for their cars. WS6 is a suspension package and is listed on the options on the inside drivers door, so is the option code Z28 on the Camaro, on the Avalanches, the Z66 is a suspension package for smoother ride i think, Z71 is just a 4x4 with skid plates and better shocks and springs. Z06 is a throw back to the old high HP vettes and Z24 i think was cause it had a 2.4L motor but im not to sure on that cause i hate economy cars

They are "RPO" (Regular Production Order, I think)codes used by GM to denote interior and/or exterior trim levels and engine designations. "Z28" is the RPO code for the equipment that comes on a stock Camaro to make it what you know as a Z28. Suspension, interior trim levels and the LS1, for starters.
A Z06 follows the same thought process. A standard C5 gets certain upgrades when the option code "Z06" is selected including the LS6.
Same for the Cavalier and others. "Z71" is the four-wheel drive off-road package (at least in an Avalanche) and "Z66" should be the two-wheel drive model truck vs. four-wheel drive.

Yea it was, Chevy needed sumthin cool sounding to seperate the new camaro from the SS one and they use the new engine code( i think thats what it was for) as the new name for the new nonSS camaro. That was in 1969

well u can get a 4x4 avalanche without the Z71 package, and U can get a regular 2wd avalanche. The Z66 and Z71 are upgrades. I work at a chevy dealership so im forced to learn all this.

I heard the Z28 comes from the engineers combining (2) technologies of V(8) engines to form a new kind of engine.
Hence, Z28.

Nope the Z66 is just a 2WD with better handling, the only AWD that chevy makes the SS truck and I think they still make the Astro in AWD for the Safe family moms.

Nope the Z66 is just a 2WD with better handling, the only AWD that chevy makes the SS truck and I think they still make the Astro in AWD for the Safe family moms.

Note that Z/28 and Z28 are different.
Z/28 refers to the 302 Camaros of '67-'69 which were different than the SS and RS Camaros;
the Z/28 had different engine/trans and other mods;
Z28 refers to the late model V8 Camaros;
the late model Camaro SS is a Z28 with a breathing and suspension package added;
the Z28 and SS have the same engine/trans;
If I missed something, please do fix this up.
(Also, LT-1 and LT1 are different just as LS-6 and LS6 are different).

Since we're talking motors as well, here is some Chevy history or facts:
First they like the L designation on motors
For instance my 69 STINGRAY has a L36 which is a 390hp 427 ci engine.
By the way, these are the RPO #s for the Corvettes (and units sold in vettes per year), but some were put in Camaros as well. I just don't have the numbers for the Camaros.

The LS6 was originally a 70 Chevelle SS454 option. It was a 450 rated horse engine(made closer to 500 or more actually) mated to a Muncie Rockcrusher M22 trans or the the built up Turbo 400. The Vette didnt get the 450 horse LS6 in 70, they waited until 71 to install it. It was basically the same engine but with lower compression. GM decided to use lower compression to get ready for low lead/no lead gas that was needed for emmissions control and for the up coming catalytic convertors. Ford and Mopar didn't lower their compression until later. The original LT-1 was a 350 with a solid lifter cam, big valve heads, high rise aluminum intake, Holley 780 cfm carb, forged pistons, forged crank, heavy duty rods(pink rods), and a four bolt main block.
The Z66 is an option on the 2wd Avalanche. The Z71 is basically an appearance package except for the Bilstein shocks and tires. The only option that actually gives you anything different than a sticker package is the ZR2 option on the 4wd S10 trucks. They actually have a wider stronger frame, 1/2 ton axle in back(8.5" ring gear), off road shocks, panhard bar in back, heavier duty axles and ring gear in front, and of course the better higher lift springs. The ZO6 does have a better engine and suspension, but it's still mainly an add on option that anyone can do to their Vette. You can't make a ZR2 out of a regular 4WD S10.

Any "Z" in Chevy stands for Zora Arkus Duntov. He was the chief engineer in the GM performance dept. and he is the designer of the Corvette. He had a fetish for stuffing big motors into small cars. And GM continue that tradition till this date.. He retired from GM in the late 70's and died in 1996. But even after retirement he still was there to help for every new model change. GM pays homage to him with the "Z"

The z/28 was orginaly desighned for hard corner tracks and slalom. not drag tracks. The gen4. camaro period was desighned the same way th ss package just adds exhaust ram air with hood and badging. I'm sure there's other things but can't remeber them all. But in my opinion the z/28 is better for getting away from th cops than a mustang or even th zl1 wich is 4 seconds slower than th new z/28 on the nurburing track

I'm sure there's other things but can't remeber them all.
