Too much crackcase pressure will cause it to leak too...might want to check that.

From the searches that I have done on this subject (in the past before you know what) most seem to be successful without using the tool.

just replaced mine saturday.. for the 3rd time. Do yourself a favor, use the tool. The first two times we used a screwdriver and it leaked horribly. Also they revised the seals, you need a new backplate to properly fit the new rear main seal. With the new plate comes new hardware, which actually has a larger head on the bolt which allows the torque to be spread more evenly. You do not need to drop the oil pan to switch the plate, we did not. Also we baught the plate, which had the seal already installed, the actual gasket and hardware right off ebay. Everything came ready to go, OEM parts. Its the best method IMO. Was like 65$ too which is cheap for what all you get. Any questions PM me.

was doing some more research and found this
https://ls1tech.com/forums/manual-tr...-oil-leak.html

It takes literally just the slightest hits to that plug to cause a leak. The good news is the plug is cheap (just above $5 at a dealership) and it's easy to fix once you get to it. The bad news is that you have to full drop the tranny and take the clutch assembly back out. Keep in mind that with your issue, it's either A) Rear Main Leak or B) Oil Galley Plug leak. Those are the only 2 oil leak locations that I am aware of that can cause oil to get to the clutch location. You can most likely get away with simply applying RTV around the plug however replacement is very easy. You simply take a flathead screwdriver and a hammer and tap sharply at top of the plug. Once you have knocked the plug's top end back a bit it is very easy to grab the bottom of the plug with a pair of pliers. Don't be scared to give it a good tap getting to that point, there is still around a 1/2 inch of crank area before you actually can knock it into the oil pan. I highly recommend that every clutch job consists of one step in which RTV is applied around that plug. It's just smart maintenance to prevent leaks and I have done more than a few clutches on these cars.

Here are 2 video clips to help you out. They are from an install video that I created on the Ls1 Clutch Install and will be featured on my new site:

This talks about the plug...
