Clean your EGR valve with carb cleaner. (Don't let the stuff get on your hands, paint, or anywhere else if you can help it.) Make sure there are no leaks from the EGR. I'd say clean your throttle body as well while you're at it (put paper towel under the TB opening; you don't want this stuff dripping on the rest of your engine). See where that puts you and get back to us. Do note that the EGR valve does have a gasket, so before you take it off, you might want to pick up a new one just in case.

Not sure on a 97. It should be visible easily enough. It will be something that comes up from one of the exhaust manifolds. Look up the part on a parts website like Rockauto, and try and find the part that looks like it.

This may of course not cure your issue, but do that and we'll see where you're at then.

It's easy if it's not too rusted. Before you start, unplug the fuse for the fuel pump and try to start the car. That'll clear a good amount of the fuel out of the lines. Then you can do it easier. Keep your face away from the filter when you unhook it. Have some rags and perhaps a small bucket ready.

I need to get off my lazy *** and replace mine sometime, too.
