Default AC recharge question, just refill and good to go??

Ok about a year ago i replaced my radiator and in doing so i bent one of the ac lines and you could hear the system lose all pressure.

If i fix the leaking part and just buy one of those refill kits will i be set? Or is there something else i should do too? Again i have not ran the ac for a year now. thanks

No, you need to have the system evacuated first, and then charged. In fact, at this point it would probably be a good idea to have the system flushed to get the dirt and moisture out.

have it hooked to a machine that way they can pull a vacuum on the system to make sure there isnt any leaks in it.

it all ranges from place to place. call around to local shops and see how much it would cost for them to charge it up. i know here at my dealership it cost $45 for labor plus the R134 so it varies

You will need to replace the hose, replace the desicant(receiver/dryer) and the TXV tube. . . .

The dryer has a dessicant bag inside that absorbs moisture. If your system has been open for a year, you have moisture in the system and the bag is useless. You need a new one.

Can you put the dryer in the oven at low temp to "recharge" or dry the desiccant pack back out? I've heard of people doing this with their desiccant packs used in gun safes. Just a thought

Why not? but i wouldn't put it your home oven or a welding rod oven because of the oil. Its probably worth buying a new one anyway. The desicant bags get rotted with age and start to fall apart. Then it ruins the compressor. Best just to get new.

You could, but you'll have to destroy the metal shell to get at the dessicant. It's not made to come apart.
If you do manage to figure out a way to get the dessicant out, in the oven at 200 degrees for an hour.

You wouldn't need to pull it out...with the hose off the car its wide open!

Very true, but as the dessicant is inside something you won't get all the moisture out, either. You'd have to rig something to blow through it.

Lol, I was just thinking out loud guys. In theory it could be done but you are probably better off just buying a new one.
