Default My steering rack is leaking...I need some help!

it looks to be leaking from the upper seal on the drivers side...a mechanic told me the whole rack would need to be replaced...is that necessary? and if that is the only way for it to be fixed is it a necessary fix as long as i keep power steering fluid levels up? also, any idea how much that would be to have replaced? any info would be great!

I'd get under the car and look up above the alternator to see if you see the power steering pump leaking at the shaft/seal. It is very common for the pump seal to leak and the fluid can get thrown around by the pulley/belt so it could look like its coming from anywhere.

I know this sounds stupid but it worked for me, Put some Lucas Power Steering stop leak in your reservoir.

did you have to replace the whole rack then?

i can see if that'll do the trick...but if its a blown seal it likely wont, right?

I just did mine myself in about 4 hours, the part was about $400. I've had a couple racks done in other similar vehicles for about $700, with someone else doing the work.

It's not that bad of a job, but you will likely have to loose the driver side motor mount and jack up the engine some to get the driver side rack mount bolt out. I spent a good deal of time staring at it trying to find another way around it it, but in the end, it wasn't that big a deal.

Is the Shaft/Seal replacable?

GM Sells a kit for between $30 to $50 (depends on where you buy it) that includes the seals and the bearing for the input shaft to the rack. I went this route on my rack when it started leaking. It was not that hard to install and the repair lasted a couple of years before it leaked again; after that I bought a Delco rebuild and have not had any problems since.
