Default Starter relay going bad?

Some times when I go to start the car, it won't crank at all. If I come back some time later, it usually will crank fine. It happened again this morning, and I decided that I didn't want to wait for it, so I tried swapping relays. Swap the starter relay, and it turns over and starts on the second try.

Just wondering if anyone has had this problem before, and it was something other than the starter relay. I just want to make sure it wasn't coincidence that it worked after I swapped it.

I agree, the relay was likely your issue then. They do go bad from time to time, it's not unheard of.

Well crap. Either the replacement relay is going bad (doubt it), or the problem is something else. It did it again today.

Anyone have any other ideas? It's an L36 engine if it matters.

Is this happening when the engine is cold or hot?

It does it both. This thread was started when I tried starting it early in the morning to go to school. It did it again today after having driven around for a while and stopping at a store for a few minutes.

Maybe the starter itself is going bad.

Do you hear any clicking when this happens? Or nothing at all?
