i have been noticing smoke from my tail pipes. i wasnt too worried about it cuz my o2s r bad and i have no cats with straight pipes and headers. i was told its gonna smoke. but somebody was checking out my car and they were like do u go thru oil between changes (mobil 1 5w-30). i said yeah like a quart, how can u tell? he went up to my tailpipes and swiped his finger inside and it had some oil on it. should i be worried about this. the motor is a 2002 gm crate motor with about 12k on it. anybody know whats going on and should i be concerned?

Maybe you have some blown valve seals.
Are you leaving a trail of white-ish/blue smoke when you go WOT from a steady cruising speed, then it slowly clears up as you continue accelerating? Thats a tell-tail sign of bad valve seals. Its what I had going on....smoke trail and burning alot of oil. On morning, cold start-up the **** would shoot out onto the ground as wet raw oil. All I did was remove the heads, had them rebuilt and then I had zero smoke trail when I went WOT and the oil burning was stopped.

You sure it was oil, And not that black **** that blows out when running rich from the bad 02 sensors? Ive seen cars run so rich it would leave black puddles in the driveway behind the tailpipes. I guess its a mixture of carbon and fuel and other good ****.

Not a lot of oil in tail pipes but can tell its presence. Checked oil but looks good not even a quarter of a quart low. And have gone about 2k miles on last change. I just need to know if I should be concerned.

my god, the OP said he didn't have an oil consumption problem, therefore, how could it possibly be oil in his tailpipes?? It's NOT OIL!
Its a combination of soot, fuel, and water which is produced by combustion

You do not have a oil consumption problem. If you used a quart every 1,000 miles GM will tell you that you are within specs. I do not think that is oil in your tail pipes. Sounds like it runing rich and it is carbon build up. My guess is that you need to replace those bad O2 sensors and your problem shoud go away. You can buy some cheepie ones like bosh or NGK but you will be much better off if you use the GM parts. I have seen a few guys that have had to go and buy the GM O2s after they tried the cheepie sensors and they just did not work like the OEM parts. The GM sensors should last you 90,000-100,000 miles.
