At least it comes out easy from the bottom. I got mine rebuilt for $75 which beats $160+ for a rebuilt one.....

the alternator location must have something to do with its failure, but i got no proof of it. When I went to test drive my car, I got about 2 miles and the check engine light came on. The car started lightly sputtering. It was in the evening, so I shut my lights off and turned around and by the time I got back to the guys house, it died right there in the drive way.
I did help the guy bring down the price, so I guess I was happy the alternator crapped out.

Well she is running alot better now and I ama glad to have her running after 2 days down. The wiring on the back was a bitch to get off. Had to keep twisting the alternator to get it out. Other then that, pretty easy swap I guess.

yeah mine lasted 3 days after buying the car. its just one of those maintenance issues that will happen eventually and just so happened to be right when you get it.

Yeah I had the car almost 2 weeks. Im doing preventative maintenance on her. Oil and tranny are done, alternator. Next is the belts and plugs, then brakes. What kinda of brake pads are most of you guys using on yours?

Thought about getting a decent pair of ceramic, even though I have stock rotors.

I just got my LS1 a few months ago and I never noticed the alternator location. The only thing worst/crazier than putting an alternator that low would be to put a distributor that low, under a water pump, behind a damper...oh, wait...

I bought an alternator with the lifetime warrenty when it first went out. I have since replaced it twice for free. It is a normal issue on these cars.

Oh, my Strano 35mm bar actually make the swap easier.

Yea the exciter wire for me is harder to get back in then out.

I take a wire clothes hanger and cut it up so it has a bend at the end that hooks under the plug, pull up on it, comes right out from above.

I bought a 100% new one, now it's whistling, I traced it to the bracket so it's either the alt or idler.

Mine lasted 10 years and 225,000 + miles .... the power steering pump seal started leaking and killed the alternator...pulled the power steering pump pulley replaced the seal ($7.50) and replaced the alternator with a new one from Summit..had $50 in Summit bucks built up so it only cost $100 for the new one (not a rebuild) with a lifetime warrantee. Hope this one last as long as the OEM one...
