Steering issues and lots of "play" in the wheel...

For quite some time now the steering on my car has been messed up. It turns fine when i turn to the left but when i turn to the right there is absolutely no power steering, its a workout to turn it. Any ideas? Could it be that i need to replace the steering rack?

Also, what would cause lots of "play" in the wheel? I can turn the wheel back and forth quite a bit from left to right and the car won't move while driving. Ideas?

Sounds like you need a steering rack and tie rod ends. Get the car in the air and have someone shake the tires left to right quickly and inspect to see where the play is. Most likely outer tie rod ends, but could also be worn inners or a worn out steering rack. Either way you probably want new rod ends on a new rack. Moog is a good brand, don't buy cheap parts store ends or you'll be replacing them again in a year or two.

An easier way to check the tie rod ends is to grab a hold of them and if u can move them at all they should be replaced, i used moog when i replaced mine and its a night and day difference, steering was a lot tighter afterwards

If you have a difference in power assist between left and right, you need a rack. Reman racks come with new, or at least tested, inner tie rod ends. While you're at it, new outers would be a great idea. And yes, Moog is the only way to go.
