TA wheels on a Firebird, lug nuts are coming off?!?!

Default TA wheels on a Firebird, lug nuts are coming off?!?!

I put the chrome Trans Am wheels on my 1994 Firebird. I was working on the car and took a wheel off and noticed it was only 2 or 3 threads deep in the wheel, and that worried me. These were aftermarket locking lug nuts, and I am going back to stock cause it isn't worth it. However, are the threading patterns different on Firebird and Trans Am wheels? I didn't think so because the wheels are interchangeable as far as I knew, just making sure.

The studs are the same, its just the lugnuts you were using, put the stockers back on, with the plastic caps. Or you can get the correct chrome replacements.

Are you properly torquing the lugnuts to 100 ft-lb?

Is it critical to torque to proper ft-lbs? Everyone I see just cranks away and I've never seen a problem

If you want the nuts to stay on for an older car - 100% yes.

When you torque the lug nuts, it stretches the stud like a piece of wet spaghetti. When the stud stretches, it presses the threads of the stud and nut together with more force. This increased force creates more friction and is what holds the nut on.


Is this only on one wheel? If so, you may have some issues with worn threads on the studs, etc.

9 out of 10 times you wont have any issues but it is a safe precaution to take. You should also re-torque(or tighten if you choose not to torque) the wheels after 400-500 miles.

Proper torque also makes sure the wheel to brake rotor and hub interface is nice with evenly distributed force.

Are you sure the nuts were deep enough for the studs?

The hubs on the rear of your 94 are a couple thousand's bigger than the inside diameter of the rim hub.

Take a file or a dremel and grind a couple thousand's off the inside rim hub.
