Diff Advice please
K...bought a '99 Z/28 in August. I posted back then about a noise I was hearing but can't seem to locate that thread now. Anywho...I was told today that the diff bearings need to be changed and they'll see from there if it needs additional work. My question is is it worth doing $800 (Can) worth of work to a stock carrier or do most people just go with something beefier? Forgive my newness...I have been a thirdgen person up 'til very recently. Now I'm flying without a net.
Thanks!
Thanks!

$800 is a bit pricey for parts & labor, I shop elsewhere IMO.
I wouldn't say a quality carrier bearing is $6.00 more like $30 each for a orignal quality bearing like Timken bearings.
If your just using the car for a stock daily driver, not racing it or modding the engine for big power the stock carrier is fine.
Not worth a whole lot IMO to beef up a 10 bolt.
It likely has a limited slip carrier in it now , so not much to improve upon.
I would suggest you get the advise & pricing from a driveline type shop.
If there is a driveshaft rebuilder in your area that offers shop services they usually do axle work as well.
They're generally not inclined to charge so much for axle work due to familiarity.

Welcome to Canadian prices guys. You should see what we spend at the grocery store! Anyway...yeah...two quotes, two different shops...same price.
So of the aftermarket stuff out there...what's a good bet?

Unless you are a animal find a good shop to fix your stock rear. They last a long time if properly maintaned. Unfortuneatly most are run low on oil because of pinion seal leaks and they don't get checked for oil level=noisy failure. Be sure yours is full of oil before spending money....lots of people waiting to take your money out there.

AC Delco carrier bearing.......rockauto.com......$5.19
Unless thats not all it needs for a rebuild...thats pretty cheap.
Either way...lets say the parts are $100.00........are they really charging $700 for labor.
Thats nuts....
