Where did you introduce the smoke?

Well, smoke could go into the intake, through the PCV line and into the valve cover, then into the crankcase and out the oil fill cap.

Only other way is getting by a piston ring.......if he hooked the smoke up to the front vacuum port on the passengers side of the intake.

put your hand over the oil filler tube and see if you feel any pressure on your hand.

You can get a leak either at the cap itself or at the base of the filler neck (it has an O ring). Either way it's like a vacuum leak, the PCV will be pulling in un-metered air.

Normal with smoke machine testing. Fix the cap leak, the crankcase system needs to be sealed.
