Default Non-messy Door Hinge Lubrication

What product(s) and method(s) do you use to lubricate door hinges and detent rollers for effectiveness without too much mess?

As clean as my 98 Trans Am is, the door hinge area had probably never been thoroughly cleaned. I finally cleaned them earlier today with, in part, clearcoat-safe, wheel cleaner spray; so a bit aggressive. I intend to hit the entire hinge area with a spray wax and wipe it down. After, what do you suggest for an effective lubricant that will not make a mess?

I am using an aerosol lithium grease in conjunction with the dispensing straw on my daily driver, but it is hard to apply without making a mess. It tends to splatter. Ok on my beat-up daily driver, but not to keen on using it for my garage-queen TA.

Thanks.

WD-40 breaks down really quickly and will wash away in the hinge's environment. There's no place for WD-40 on our car except for breaking rusty bolts loose. Since the 80's, there are much stronger products available for lubrication.

SuperLube is great in this application. http://www.super-lube.com/ It's found at most parts stores. Parts stores will have the spray cans, but if you can wait until next week and get to a Grainger, they should be able to order you the needle dropper dispenser, which is perfect for hinges:

You can also get hinge repair kits with zerk fittings on them. This is a very involved thing (ie: PITA) to do, but all squeaks (except for the spring roller) go completely away for good.

I think that sjsingle1 was referring to a dry lube made by the WD-40 company rather than the penetrating oil we commonly call WD-40. They make a Dirt & Dust Resistant Dry Lube PTFE Spray which is suitable for door hinges.

Ah, yes. Missed that detail. They have a full line of lube, now under their brand-name, which is a little confusing.... IMO - It's like selling Sprite in a can that says "Coke" There are a lot of products....

It looks like the "WD-40 Dirt & Dust Resistant Dry Lube PTFE Spray" is a competitive product to the SuperLube. I do really like WD-40's new nozzle/straw mechanism for most jobs. However, for hinges; nothing beats the needle/pen dropper that we can get with the SuperLube. (It put's a big amount of oil only at the top of the hinge where it soaks in - no over spray.)

Super lube is awesome. GM sells Super Lube in their spray cans and its the recommended lube for door hinges. Its basically thickened silicone spray

Thanks for the responses everyone.

The hinge repair kit with zerk fittings looks awesome. Fortunately, my hinges are fine. Still, good to know about it.

According to the shop manual, “GM P/N 12346241 or equivalent” is recommended. That P/N is “ACDelco Super Lube® Multi-Purpose Lubricant” 11oz aerosol. Product label lists the following.
  • Safe to use on plastic parts
  • Turns into grease after application
  • Lubricates with PTFE
Based on this and the Super Lube website, it appears the non-ACDelco equivalent is Super Lube® Multi-Purpose Aerosol with Syncolon® (PTFE) (P/N 31110). Company literature specifically describes it as “grease in a solvent carrier”. The Super Lube® Multi-Purpose Synthetic Lubricant with Syncolon® (PTFE) mentioned by wssix99 is an oil of ISO viscosity 100-150. There is also an 11oz Super Lube® Dri-Film Lubricant aerosol (11016) which appears similar to WD40 Specialist Dirt & Dust Resistant Dry Lube PTFE Spray. I do not believe any of these are silicone-based, as Super Lube has other, explicitly described silicone lubricants.

I ordered a 32oz non-aerosol spray bottle (51600) of Super Lube® Multi-Purpose Synthetic Lubricant with Syncolon and some syringes w/ 18ga, blunt tip needles.

Thank you again.

Here in the south, that's basically what happens... a soda is always a "Coke" then you have to specify what flavor (like Sprite or orange).
