Do a search. Specifically in the internal forums and look for posts by "Patman". He's the resident oil guru. I would listen closely to his advice.

I just put some 5W30 in my car yesterday. I want to do an oil analysis after 3000 miles or so to see how it's standing up. But I've never heard (or found on google) a bad thing about Amsoil. I paid about $4.35 a quart plus shipping for a case of 12. Cheaper than Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec.

Amsoil is definitely a better oil for the LS1 over Mobil 1. It shows lower engine wear, mainly due to it's slightly thicker viscosity, which the LS1 tends to like. I still prefer German Castrol 0w30 over either of those two though. It's working out very well so far in my C5. I've gone almost 5000 miles on this oil change and the dipstick level has not changed! The engine runs very smooth with this oil too, not a hint of piston slap. I will have my first oil analysis results from the C5 next week.

I'm still searching for the German-made Castrol in my area (since I'm not really wanting to spend the $$ for Redline in my DD's). I was told that Autozone carries it and we have one locally. Unfortunately, the 0W-30 Castrol Syntec they had (black bottle) I don't think was the right one. It didn't say anything about made in germany on the back. Haven't had any luck with the other local autoparts stores either...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Amsoil the first to develope synthetic oil??? One of my co-workers sells the stuff & he was telling me that he can go 7k between oil changes... I'm not sure if I like that idea, unless it's proven.

I was told by an owner of a machine shop that does a lot of work with LS1's that we should be running 15w 50. Does that sound right?

From all I've seen, amsoil can actually go much longer than that... What you'd really want to do to be safe is to try the amsoil, then get an oil analysis done at varying mileages with the TBN (total base number) option. That will tell you the wear and the amount of active oiling properties left after x miles.

Isn't there a guy on one of the dodge boards that runs amsoil and never changes his oil? Just tops it off when he swaps out the filter.

There are a lot of Amsoil users who do this, but they use the bypass filtration system, which uses two oil filters, one is a regular one the other is a super fine filter which removes much more stuff. Since that filter is very restrictive, that is why you need the second normal filter. The changing of the filters along with the top up oil needed is usually enough to replenish the additives in the oil to help it last very long. People who do this use oil analysis to determine when the oil is done. It's more common in big rigs though, which use very huge oil capacities (measured in gallons, not quarts!) so it's very expensive for them to change their oil too soon.

I have been replacing my PF59 filter every 2500 miles and adding a quart of Amsoil 5W-30 at that time. I started doing this at 15,000 miles and since I am getting close to 25,000 miles, I think I will drain all of it and start another 10,000 mile cycle.

My grandfather has done the same thing on his 225,000 mile 305 powered elcamino for as long as I can remember. That thing still runs like a top.

Ive been using Amsoil products for the last 5 years in my moms Envoy, dads F350, my T/A, dirtbikes and anything that can use synthetic lubes. I will never use any other kind of oil, its great stuff. I def. recommend it for LS1's,

I checked on bob's the oil guy website, and redline oil seems to come out very near the top, if not the top. So that's what my baby gets. $7.00 a quart case price.
Moms grocery getter gets castrol syntec from the speedy lube joint.

No, a straight 30 weight oil is different, as it will not flow as well in cold weather as a 0w30. The best flowing oil for cold starts in cold weather is anything with a 0w at the front of it, such as 0w20, 0w30 or 0w40.
