Default Rearend Rattle - Driving me Crazy!

Ok here is my situtation. I have done a search on here and read a couple of threads unto which I am going to try some of the things and see if they resolve the problem. However I wanted to post my specific problem and see if anyone else has had this and has fixed it yet if so.

ISSUE:

Driving down the road and hitting small bumps suck as concrete spacers, and or big bumps suck as raises in road, I hear hear a rattling noise. It sounds as though it is coming from both sides. I have had the problem for a while now and its getting to the point to where I am about to shoot myself. I am tired of driving down the road and having a nice looking car that sounds as though its about to fall apart.

Here's what I have noticed:

I have noticed that my rear calipers have some play in them. Could they be the culprate? I have also read a lot about LCA getting loose and needing to be be retightend (Something I need to Check).

Has or does anyone else have this problem and if so have you guys ever fixed it. If so how

Does it sound like a tin can rattling? If so I am trying to troubleshoot this problem as well on my 2001 Camaro SS. I will have to crawl under it to inspect the suspension/brakes for those concerns you posted. Previously I found nothing loose on my suspension when I inspected it, I had thought it was the shocks or shock mounts. I have new shocks and still the problem persists.

Check your sway bar bushings. Ive heard if theyve worn down the metal rubbing can give a noise similar to that. Also try seeing if the noise gets louder as you turn the car.

Welcome to the world of GM. Im thinking their meetings went like this:

"Hey lets build a sports car."
"Ok. We need something to rival the Mustangs."
*Draws concept and ideas*
"Looks good. Holy **** the LS1 is going into that thing?"
"Yup sure is. Lets get it in there and start marketing them!"
"Shouldn't we work out other bugs? The rattles? The gas gauge? The cracking door panels?"
"**** no man! They will be too distracted from that Vette motor."

OK Guys just a shot in the dark for you but it fixed a really really annoying rattle that my car developed last year. The rear section of the exhaust, where the hanger is on the passenger side, the exhaust will loosen and slide backwards and rattle really bad. I took mine in to the muffler shop to get the cats removed and the mechanic actually pointed it out to me. He looked at it and asked if I would like the rattle removed along with the cats. He said it is very common especially if you have had ANY exhaust work done. He loosened the clamp at the Y pipe and shifted the entire rear section forward about an inch, first he used the BFH and then a pry bar. Since I dont plan on removing it anytime soon I asked him to put a small weld on it and I have not heard the rattle since.

Hope this helps at least some of you. Good Luck

I have a new Panhard bar and that has not stopped it. I still have the stock suspension springs and so forth. they ahve 81,000 miles on them. However I have done some searching on these boards and that I keep seeing is LCA's that the bolts losen up just a bit and people are retorquing them down. So I'm going to check that this weekend or when I get time. I just have a feeling that its not what I am hearing. They best way to describe my noise is "something loose, and light metalic rattling" I guess I'll just have to with it until I figure out wtf it is.

I found that if the upper Panhard mount is loose it will
rattle.

Get the rear up on ramps, wiggle the car back & forth,
side-side, up-down and listen for it. There will be a
little axle (C-clip) slop L-R and a little gear/driveshaft
slop F-B but you're looking for "anything else", follow
your ear.

Also on a convertible the little plastic clip-screw that
secures the upholstery over the spare tire well will
rattle against its receiving boss if left loose.

Not to mention the jack & such... and might take the
shop vac to said well.

My car has been at the dealer shop for almost 2 days now. I had more of a ticking sound coming from my right rear area when slowing down and turning left at the same time. They called this morning trying to tell me they can't hear anything making noise and I told them that's impossible, it's very audible and you hafta be turning left and braking at the same thing.

They called me just a bit ago and said there is some "play" in the right rear wheel and that they will fix it and it will be covered under warranty with a $50 deductible w00t! Would like to know though exactly what would cause that...bearings..bushings..etc. I'm not very mechanically knowledgable.

Anyway, a little off topic but hope you get your noise figured out and fixed, mine was driving me nuts for awhile!

my car had a rattle from the rear when i first bought it , i found that the rear brake pads
had excessive play in the caliper bracket so they were moving around causing a metalic chatter over bumbs. try to lightly apply the brakes over bumps, see if it goes away.

If that's it then I guess its time to have some new BAER Brake Calipers installed
