That's actually what I do, except I just put it in my own garbage.

Legally, and place that sells oil must also accept oil for recycling. However in practice, not every gas station will do so. I tend to put my oil in empty windshield washer gallon containers and put those in a cardboard box and bring them to the autoparts store. I drop them off in front of the door, knock once, and quickly run away, otherwise they may make you carry it all the way into the back room. Oh, and make sure you dont put oil in a bleach or chlorine (pool shock) container as it creates a nasty reaction.
