Default Oil Pressure by Filter?

I heard that oil pressure varies with a short oil filter than from a long filter? is this true?
Which filter should I be using? Long or short? Which is better for pressure and for the car?

The long filters are better because they offer less of a restriction to flow. This may show up as slightly lower oil pressure, but the oil is flowing better through the engine so it is definitely more beneficial, especially on cold starts when the oil is thick.

Which, may i ask, is the right long filter to use for my LS1? I went looking for the Mobil 1 filter, but couldnt find it....
in the install university, they said the long filter by AC Delco, was good. What do you think about this oil guru???

I prefer the K&N oil filters now, as they offer up a strong filter that won't come apart, with a good filtering media that filters about 90% of the particles in the 10 micron range, while still maintaining excellent flow, better than the other filters out there. Most filters are in the 3GPM to 5 GPM range, while the K&Ns flow 12-16!

And that nut on the end of them really works well for removing the filters later on!

For the LS1, the K&N long one is the HP2006 (the short one is the HP1007)

If you can't find these, or want a cheaper filter that is also very good, try the Bosch Premium, part number 3423 for the long one. It's also made by the same people that make the K&N, Mobil 1 and Ultraguard Gold filters. So it's extremely high quality. Believe it or not these guys also make the Supertech filters for Walmart, and at $2 each they are a bargain! They are the same filters as the STP with a different paint job.

Here are some stats on the above filters:

Bosch Premium - 98% @ 15 micron first pass
93% @ 15 micron multi-pass
Mobil 1 - 98% @ 10 micron first pass
95% @ 10 micron multi-pass
Super Tech - 98% @ 20 micron first pass
K&N - 90% @ 10 microns multi-pass
Ultraguard Gold- 98% at 8 microns first pass

The AC Delco Duraguard filters are about a 25-30 micron filter.

The long filter will also do a better job filtering your oil. Use Mobile 1 1M206. It is the long filter.

The K&N is a great filter, but because of the way its made, your oil pressure will run a little higher.
Mine was like 65 @ WOT, with the K&N its 75-80 @WOT.
If this concerns you, you might wanna try another filter. Other than that, its great <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Can you also explain what all this means? what is a micron? are lower number microns better?

A micron is a measurement of dirt particles, for comparsion, the human hair has a cross section width of about 100 microns, and the human eye can't really see anything smaller than 50 microns.

But dirt particles that are about 20 microns and larger can cause more engine wear. Some experts have said that 10 micron particles also cause wear, but in an engine with looser clearances like the GM V8s, most 10 micron particles can pass through the engine without causing any wear. Which is why a 10 micron filter is not as big a priority for us as it would be for an engine with tighter clearances.

There is a really awesome article on oil filters from the Taurus SHO website, you will gain lots of info from here:

I can give you one example. Last Thursday I switched my 5.3 truck engine from Castol GTX 10/30 with AC PF59 filter to Mobil 1 10/30 and K&N 2006 filter. The oil pressure dropped from 60psi to 50psi. And I also noticed that the engine took almost an extra mile from my house to get up to where the temp gauge levels off. I still can't believe I could actually see a difference in the change.
