definitely get a pan, me an my buddy did mine when i was home on leave, he had a fuel pressure guage that we hooked up to the schrader valve an it took the pressure out without making a huge mess, didnt touch the battery. Oh i'd also wear like a cut-off t-shirt or something too cuz more than likely you'll get alot of gas on you.

Just be sure you are not "right" under it when you get it out.
Peace,

Gas loss is usually minimal. I never drain the fuel rail, or pull the battery line. I just pop the gas cap and pull the filter off.
Not even really sure that pulling the gas cap helps, but I do it anyway.

Fuel filters fill up with junk over time. This causes your fuel pump to work harder to overcome the blockage, and wears the pump much faster.
I change mine every 10-15K miles at most.
Sometimes I hear about people wondering why their fuel pump failed at 60-70K miles, then I hear that they never bothered to change the filter....ever. That's your answer.
