Default Woot! found GC 0W-30

Thanks to a fellow board member I have located German Castrol 0W-30 European Formula So tomorrow I will be switching out the Mobil 1 5W-30 that I have been running and in goes the Syntec. Hopefully it lives up to it's potential that everyone here talks about.

awesome. i'm trying my hardest to try and get LS1 owners to stop using that water mobil 1 markets as 5W-30.

be amazed as your valvetrain will make half the noise it once did. great choice on the GC. you won't be disappointed.

Mobil 1 is fine as long as 0-40 is used. Patman himself said it was almost on par with the GC.

oh i agree with that statement. mobil 1 0W-40 would be my second choice for oil if i stopped finding GC 0W-30. however, GC 0W-30 still uses a better base oil, provides better wear numbers and is an all-around superior oil in every aspect.

mobil 1 0W-40 is on par with GC 0W-30 on a THICKNESS scale. everything else GC is above and beyond better.

it's just mobil 1 5W-30 i don't like. soooo many people use it and it's so far from the ideal oil for an LS1. it's all marketing. i mean, it's good oil and all, but not for our engines. too thin.

What about during the winter? 0w-30 or 0w-40 seems to thick for a startup in freezing weather don't you think?

no sir. in the winter, you WANT the 0W. it protects best on cold startup and can be started in the lowest temperatures because it's thinner and lubcirates and heats up quickly. a 20W-50, conversely has a very high freezing temperature. run GC 0W-30 all year around. it's good for unaided startups up til -40*F! i've never seen oil rated that low. you simply can't get any better than that. it's amazing stuff!

For those of you who are trivia junkies, -40 *F = -40 *C!

That's the point where the two scales intersect.

And on that note, i'm going back to work.

ps- i seafoamed my gas tank and oil this weekend Choco... that oil is nasty haha.

Did you get it from the autozone on 37? If not, I shouldn't of said anything, now everyone knows where my secret stash comes from!

Let me know if you got an improvement like I did.

haven't changed the oil yet, just took a look at it at ~80 miles. Probably change it tonight to get the Mobil 1 out and the gc 0w30 in.

But it isn't above and beyond better, in fact patmat didn't even test the 0-40, just the 5w-30. The characteristics were very close with the only problem with the mobil1 being it was too thin. He said he wanted to do an anaylysis on the 0-40 but I have yet to see it. Maybe he'll chime in.

yes, it is above and beyond better. the base oil is what makes GC 0W-30 much better. patman has stated repeatedly in his testing the GC has "by far" the most exotic base he's ever seen. no mobil 1 can compare.

i've seen a few analysis tests of mobil 1 0W-40. they were good, but they were amsoil tests so of course the amsoil "won". i'll tell you what though, the mobil 1 0W-40 freed up 8 more horsepower than the amsoil.

GC is still superior though

i'd like to see an amsoil 0W-30 vs. GC 0W-30 test.

My bad it was actually the Amsoil 5w-40 that he reccomended, followed by either the Mobil 1 5w or 1w 40 which for the most part can't be found anymore. That's why a lot of people use the 0w-40. I can't find **** in my area though. Have looked everywhere.

I went from Castrol to Mobil 1 15W-50 and love it head over heals over the castrol.
Castrol was in my 86 and I hated it. Whent from 5W-30 in my 96 to the 15W-50 and noticed a difference.
My father runs it in his near 200k miles turbo porsche and loves it over any other.
But to each his own but I do not like the 5W30 of any oil in a high performance car. I only use it in my beater. Granted the 15W-50 is not the greatest in very cold weather.

I know the oil debate will never end like the 9mm or .45 debate will never end but you can't go wrong with a full synthetic, to each his own. I personally have no problem paying $6 for a quart of oil LOL. For TR-6's, oil, and a fram race filter it costs me $50! All well.

somebody tell this guy that the made in germany castrol 0W-30 we're talking about that's only available at autozone is totally different than normal castrol or castrol syntec

try some GC 0W-30 from autozone. it's above and beyond superior in every aspect. just make sure it says "made in germany" on the back. the made in america castrol syntec is

MY GOD!! i hope you are not running a 50W oil in your LS1! the manual specifically says not to use 20W-50's. a 15W-50 will run the same way. it's far too thick and will not oil parts correctly. the motor will be very quiet since the oil is so damn thick, but you'll be killing the internals. the oil is just too thick to get to all the parts! i'd get that stuff out of there right now. you may as well put gear oil in your LS1.

I am not trying to steall this thread, but I have read many posts saying how great the German Castrol is, what is the difference between that and the one made in the US?
I went to autozone last week to try and get some, but could only find the made in US one...is that bad for the car?
thanks
