Default TA is eating power steering pumps

The car has gone through 3 power steering pumps in last 4 years. WTF??? Any suggestions? Is there a better quality pump out there?

It makes noises (like a whining noise), and starts to loose power slowly over the course of like 3-5 months. It will be fine for a while, and then it will go out completely. It will come back and then go out again.

I've heard that too, the racks will wear and you get metal and crap in the system. This then destroys the pump. Maybe you should try this---> http://www.magnefine.com/

It's for transmissions and power steering, you just put it in your return line and it should filter out all that crap, I think it costs around $22. I just saw it today, I think I'll put one in when my pump starts leaking again.

+1 for the cooler. I had the same problem.
Try a Turn One pump next time: they are made to last longer under high rpm.

I was killing pumps like crazy as well. Changed it to a TurnOne pump in 2005 and even removed the cooler last summer. Still running great.

how hard is the install. Am doing h/c right now. Is this something that would go on relatively easy during this install?

a breaking/broken rack will pollute the pump...the pump with little metal shavings will go over and over again...

Hi Dean! How is it going?
Have you noticed a different feeling after installing the Turn One pump?
They say it pumps less fluid, it's harder while parking and it's more direct at high speed...

Hi Tici,

Doing good THX.

I didn't notice any difference at all and i'm running 285/35/18's in front. The steering rack though just died. Not too bad after several years (Yep still the original one) of AutoX and abuses.

How do you know the steering rack is gone?
Hard to turn? Noises?

The troubles with my steering pump began with the relocation of the reservoir as per Vortech's instructions. At the same time I began to AutoX... so I don't know if it's the driving style or the reservoir relocation.
After the 1st pump I installed a cooler (just after abusing of the 2nd pump).
The cooler avoided further damages, but the pump is noisy now. Not enough to replace it (I'm soo cheap )

No noises but it started clunking inside teh rack and there is way too much play in it now (I first thought it was the inner rods but I replaced them and still same play.) It also started leaking like **** recently.

What can cause this failure?
In my mind the steering rack is something that lasts forever...
OK, it can leak.

racks leak, which cause friction due to lack of fluid in the system, when this happens metal from the rack gets into the pump and destroys it....also the rack will stick and this is another time its broke...ive put two into my car, just a normal thing
