Default Changing water pump and thermostat, which to use?

My water pump is leaking and making some noise, I've shopped around a little and Autozone sells a new unit(no core) with a lifetime warranty for $134
http://www.autozone.com/selectedZip,.../selectZip.htm

I'd love to put a Meziere in but at over $600 it's a little out of my budget right now...any other suggestions?

Also, they have a 160 thermostat by Mr. Gasket for $14
http://www.autozone.com/R,APP83952/v...ductDetail.htm

anyone know the difference if any to most of the other LSx thermostats like the Hypertech which is about $60?
I'll probably be doing the change this weekend..thanks for any help.

I think I see a difference in thermostats...the Hypertech and SLP contain the housing...unless mine is cracked is there a need to change it?

Believe the new GM LS1 replacement pumps do have a different style thermostat, and the Hypertech/SLP style won't fit them. Thinking the newer GM unit comes with the new stat (185*?) and housing? Someone will chime in that's been through this before - remember seeing posts on buying the Hyp/SLP stat and not fitting because the water pump was replaced.

pretty sure you have to change the whole thermostat housing.

yes, but that thermostat is showing up on their site for my 98. They also carry some with the housing for $32.
http://www.autozone.com/R,APP85164/v...ductDetail.htm

Is there a reason why I can't just use my existing housing with a new thermostat?

Check out the Victor series waterpumps from Edelbrock. The use the 2004 and up thermostat housing and are supposed to flow 15% at like 1500 rpm than stock. Probably alot cheaper than electric. Just a thought.

I looked in my Summit catalog and couldn't find an Edelbrock for LS1's however I just looked on the site http://store.summitracing.com/partde...&autoview=sku:
$436.69

Electric LT1 pumps are under $200, why are these LSx high performance pumps so pricey?

It seems that some of the replacement parts available
for the LS1 are actually Gen IV or LS2 parts.

Not sure about the thermostat. It does state that the waterpumps
are interchangable.

i went with a NAPA reman pump, and a hypertech 180 stat with housing.

do youself a favor and do the housing as well. the reason for that is that the dexcool can damage the old housing, and it will save you time to just throw a new one on there.

also, do yourself the favor of replacing the quick clamps on the 2 heater hoses with hose clamps.

be careful cleaning the block of the old gasket... don;t nik or scratch it... when you get it all off, use brake cleaner and scotchbrite pads to make it smooth.

It says in that article "The LS2's thermostat and housing were redesigned to accept a simpler, drop-in style thermostat compared to the difficult-to-disassemble Gen-III version on the left. "

I guess they're a PITA to take out of the housing?

I guess I'll spend the xtra $20 on a thermostat with the housing then. Thanks for the info, will probably do it tomorrow. I've changed 2 water pumps(and opti's) on LT1s before so I hope this doesn't give me to much trouble.

I'm doing a head cam swap soon, so I might as well replace the waterpump
and thermostat/housing too.

Ok I put the brand new Duralast water pump and 160 degree valucraft thermostat in(the Mr.gasket is for the later LSX engines)put a gallon of dex cool in...and filled the rest with distilled water...was a piece of cake...took a few hours and I could probably do it again in under 2! I also bypassed the throttle body coolant with a 5/16 hose, ported the throttle body, lopped off the egr tube(the screens of the MAS were already removed and I just recently cut the air box and air dam) I was a little alarmed after I filled it up and the temp shot straight to 210, but I bled some air out and put more water in and the car is running at about 170-180 in this 80 degree weather now! I can also say I definitely feel a SOTP difference from doing those free mods...whether cleaning some buildup out of the t-body helped...the car feels great!

It sounds like someone had a busy weekend.
How was the quality of the waterpump and other parts from Autozone ?

I installed some ceramic brake pads, front and rear rotors
from Autozone and they were actually decent quality.

That's good to know about the quality of the waterpump and thermostat.
I'll have to checkout one of those waterpumps and stat. Heck they even
stock Melling oil pumps and lifters.
