Default How to remove center console - My car ate my friend's wedding ring...

He set it on the edge of the lid for the ashtray in my T/A, and then I realized the lid is broken and tried to grab the ring... well the lid collapsed and the ring fell into that little slot where the lid's hinge is.

In the process of trying to fish it out, the ring is totally out of sight under that metal plate that everything is attached to.

So here is my question: Can anyone give a semi-detailed description on how to get the entire center console out? I can remove the part around the gear-selector, but I think I need to remove the big piece of the console also.

Also... anyone know if there are holes under there where the ring can fall out completely?

Thanks lol

Just start taking out all the bolts holding the console down, there are a few down in the console, a few up under the a/c controls - not a tough job just need to find all the bolts

Yea, it comes out easy, two on the bottom under the arm rest, two under the arm rest under the cup holder, one under the ash tray and one on each side up front by the HVAC controls, i think thats all of them, then just pull your E-brake up as high as you can and take your shift **** off and the whole console should just lift out.

Why not try to fish some type of long magnet in there first instead of tearing the whole dash apart?

You need to use a long screw driver to hold the catch on the e brake so it won't pull the cable, this will get it to go up high enough.

^^^ good point

As for the magnet... there appears to be a massive iron plate in there. I HIGHLY doubt that they put in stainless, so the magnet would instantly get stuck to it.

Not to mention that (most, if not all) wedding bands are not magnetic.

Is is 24k gold? If it isn't, if you hold it in the center, you may be able to attract it.

who puts their wedding ring down precariously next to a crevace in an area where you're working? Seems like the ultimate looking for trouble. Forget about the value, but the risk of making the wife wonder why you had your ring off and how you really lost it lol. I'd be putting it in a ziploc bag and putting it somewhere safe...But good luck with it.

Gold is not magnetic. It cannot be picked up with a magnet.
If you have gold that can, then it's fake. Period.

I think he was saying if it was gold plated vs. solid gold??? thats why he said hold it in the center, since a plated ring has more gold on the outside vs inside....

Right. If it's not 24k gold, it'll be magnetic if there's any iron or some other metallic alloys in it. Hoss up there didn't understand my post but was quick to insult

2 7mm screws remove the top part of the center console, and then if you need to take more off, there are 5 10mm screws that hold the whole thing in place, 2 at the front on teh sides, 2 in the center console, and 1 under the upper console part (if memory servs me correctly)

http://www.installuniversity.com/ins...er_install.htm if you have a manual is a great step by step.

Appreciate the help. Unfortunately it's an auto, but I'm pretty sure it won't be that difficult now that I know where the screws are.
