Default T-Top Flew off! Wtf?!

So last night im driving less than 30 seconds from my house and all the sudden i hear a loud whoosh sound and my passenger side ttop is gone. My and my gf spent an hour with spot lights looking for it and finally found that it had perfectly impaled itself through a stake on the side of the road, no glass left whatsoever. It was quite sad to see. Now the question is - I know it was secured and latched in, but not locked, but how the hell did it come loose? I was doing no more than 40 at the time. If anyone has a passenger charcoal ttop for sale let me know.

I can't even imagine. I hope you can store your car indoors till you get a replacement. This is the prime reason I don't let anyone but myself handle the T-tops...can't trust anyone but #1

Check the latches every so often. Make sure the pins come out properly, and make sure that the holes that they latch into haven't gotten pushed back. When I remember to I latch mine then give them a tug to be sure they are fully locked in place.

Junkyard or ebay would be the best bet for a replacement.

kinda reminds me of that time on the fast and the furious where the green eclipse sprays his car trying to beat the red rx7(vin diesel) and at the end of the race his floorboard falls off for no reason, haha.

but yea, that sucks dude.

I can get one for 150 from a junkyard, but im just so pissed off as I dont have a garage or indoor spot. I have to tie down a plastic tarp onto the car everynight. One thing I was worried about was the lock, my drivers side actually doesnt even have one (just a hole where the lock used to be). Is it possible to have the locks re keyed for the car and if so how much should that run?

Yes. You can. The lock cylinders are about 15-23 a piece from the dealer. I am not sure on the new price. I checked like 3 years ago. I am not sure if they come coded or not. I am sure they do if you supply the VIN.

I had lockcylinders so I just bought tumblers and new caps.

A locksmith should be able to do this for you! But, it isn't hard to do it yourself either.

There are adjustments that need to be checked every so often to make sure the pins and mount holes are all tight. Gotta check them! Man, I had a charcoal set about 6 months and had no use for it. Gave them away to some dude for free. $150 ain't bad though.

Wow, that sucks.

I check mine about every other drive. I am always afraid of that happening.

Now I will check them every time I take the beast for a drive.

At least it did not hit anyone.

I had my driver's side t-top fly off. I didn't latch it though. Drove for like 20 miles, then I decided to put the window down at 50mph, flew right off. Luckily it didn't break, wedged itself up against a white picket fence, had to go back in the daytime to find it. Had a bunch of white scuff marks and dirt all over it.

When that T-Top flies off it's got to have a hell of a flight.

Just pops off and takes off flying, these things are not too light either.

The dealer warned me about this when I picked up my car in '99. They had this happen to several of their customers. Most often, passengers will mistake the T-Top handle for an "oh-****" handle and will grab it to hold on. The rest of the stories are sad ones.

Keeping them locked eliminates the possibility.

been there bro usually happens when you don't lock it down yourself (ie don't trust anyone else to do it, unless they have one too)

insurance took care of mine for me, but if you check the right places like ebay, junk yard, or TA creations they might have a good deal

Sounds like human error is the main cause for losing a t-top...

Try ebay or post in the "wanted" section.

happened to me also. your latches on the car are out of adjustment, it wouldn't have mattered if they was locked or not. if you remove the trim where your latches on your t-topp go to the vehicle there is about two 10mm bolts that adjust the latches. if you look at the design over time they get pushed out from normal use and you loose your topps.
