but GMHTP said the SLP 85mm MAF was a GOOD thing
i forgot which issue,
its the one with the red Ws6 on the cover
anyway,
they say that the SLP 85mm MAF initially causes a drop in hp and tq, but after like a bunch of miles, they gained i forgot like 10/15 hp or so. something about the car having to learn the air and adjust.
but everyone on this board is again aftermarket MAFs
whats up?

Re: but GMHTP said the SLP 85mm MAF was a GOOD thing
basically
aftermarket mafs trick the computer into thinking there is a different amount of air coming into the motor, than what really is.
This normally results in some air not being metered, and the car running leaner.
Lean = power, so thats good... BUT
the computer also used the MAF for load calculation.
Load tables are used to get timing, and fuel, and Transmission shifting.
When the load is being read wrong, it alters all of these.
On many cars, they are close enough to correct info, to run correct.
But many others, they are not close enough to correct, and they cause undesired operation, IE, too lean, too much timing, pinging ect.

Re: but GMHTP said the SLP 85mm MAF was a GOOD thing
You have to know which SLP MAF, which year car,
and whether it really wants leaner or not.
One of the SLP options does not affect mixture
much (the '01-'02 version). This means it will
not change your HP/TQ unless you've got a real
heavy breather. The '98-'00 is more like many of
the other aftermarket MAFs, bends your mixture
(hence HP/TQ changes after time).
Tuning by bolt-on without a clue as to present
and ideal mixtures is a crap-shoot. Aftermarket
MAF vendors do not publish the effects of their
product (like frequency / flow and pressure
drop / flow compared to stock, so you could
compare fidelity and potential performance gains)
except in the most weaselly-worded marketing way.
If they did, it would likely hurt them. It's much
better to sell size & sizzle than dwell on the
details, when one detail is, you could get tuned and realize the same gains without somebody's
$149.95 (or even $349.95) aftermarket piece.
Hell, for the price of a GMAF you're about
halfway to the cost of buying low-end AutoTAP + LS1-Edit already (if you already have a laptop).
By and large, car mag writers are a bunch of
leg-humping lap dogs. The ones who **** off the
advertisers, don't work there long. GMHTP is
cut of the same cloth, by my read. They're no
deeper than Car Craft, though you might hope that
single-marque focus would allow more depth of
field. You can learn way more hanging out on the
'boards than you'll get out of that (or any) mag.
Plus, you get to hear the opposing viewpoint, not
just the vendor-schmooze story.
But they do have pretty pictures of F-bodies.
Just don't pretend you read it for the articles,
'K?

Re: but GMHTP said the SLP 85mm MAF was a GOOD thing
I would add that if the schmooze-fest is an issue with any company relative to GMHTP, SLP is that company (with MTI running a close second). I can't get through an issue without a disproportionately large number of pages being devoted to SLP.
Meanwhile, Harlan can't get his car in the magazine, and in my view he's one of the real driving forces in this market.
Now, that being said...
I have an SLP 85mm MAF. I'll let you know what happens when it gets tuned.

Want proof...
With Lid, SLP MAF and Loud Mouth: 13.5 @ 106
With Lid, Loud Mouth and STOCK MAF: 13.2 @ 108
However, I did de-screen the stock MAF.
AS per the advice of this board, I took the SLP MAF off of my car. I was getting beat by LS1's with similar mods and was P.O.'ed! That did the trick - now if I could get the 60' down, I'd be in the 12's!!!

Re: but GMHTP said the SLP 85mm MAF was a GOOD thing
I ran a home-ported MAF with a MAF translator, lid and a cutout and pulled a 13.1@109 out of the car.
Without the MAF translator it knocked like crazy.
I think that any MAF switch needs time to settle in, did you give yours enough?

i think there's many better mods than switching the MAf.
if the MAF can work fine with 700rwhp turbo applications then do u really need aftermarket?

it's all about the advertising dollar i once offered a part i designed to a magazine editor for free and told him i would install it and tune it for him and all he had to do was write what he found. he said sure as long as i advertised in the mag and he would write whatever i wanted him too

i just noticed
on ls1.com
the guys on the top 100
all have 85mm MAF
mostly SLP, some Pace or other
if you install the 85mm MAF
and then tune, wont it then be beneficial?
all i know,
if i ever experiment with one
it will probably be one of the last mods i do.

Stay On or take it off?
got the g-maf from a friend for $100 who needed cash so thought it was cheap buy. No way in hell would i have payed $320!
99 M6 TA - FTRA, Borla/cutout, Lid, and a good ol Fernco.
ps- had a 98 but had a slight mishap with water + nitto's. Thats why the 98 is in my name

All I have for mods on my TA are lid/filter, all free mods, and a Dynomax muffler. My buddy let me use his Granateli (sp?) MAF to see if there was any difference (because he LOST power in his '02). I took my car for a couple test spins right after and DID notice a difference SOTP. Never got to dyno it though. People have said it's because my car's a 99 and has a difference fuel system, or something like that, and that's why it can compensate for the leaning of the A/F mixture.
I'm now getting it for free from him so I figure I might as well put it on if it's not hurting me. Plus I'll be able to get it tuned in the Spring, so it should be all good, right?

We use SLP mass airs on a lot of cars and have yet to see a problem with them especially when tuning. Stock will suport a 700 hp turbo car because you are forcing air into the motor. Put a 85mm mass air and tune on the same car and it will probably be a 750hp car.

heads and monster cam
but stock lid,
i can make 400+ rwhp also.
that is not proof that the stock lid is the way to go.

I descreened my SLP 85mm MAF and it was OK.
I filed it with a chain saw file to remove some
casting flash and that made it a little too lean.
Changing the resistor from 2700 to 3300 ohms
put it back right, my O2s are .89 - .91V all through
the band at WOT with zero knock on a Predator
canned tune (per EFILive logs). You could take
a truck MAF and just put the 2700 ohms on it,
and be done for real cheap (these MAFs are on
the Internet for under $50 all the time). Delphi
P/N 25168491. Rich as a pig without the resistor,
but that's a 39 cent problem. The connector pigtail
to adapt it to the F-body, available at Pace, will
probably cost you more than the MAF ($39 unless
you want to roll your own).
But I got my SLP used for like $80, so it's about the
same dough either way.

Raptor99, can't that kill an automatic transmission pretty quick?
I wouldn't touch my MAF if I had an auto. I mean, is it really worth a $1200+ transmission for a mod that may or may not increase power, but has without a doubt killed many trannys?

Well, i finally went to the track with the goal of testing out the G-maf on my car. G-maf has been on the car for a little over a week now so i guess thats plenty of time to "settle in"... (dunno) Figured i'd post this incase anyone was curious.
G-Maf Runs
1. 13.30 @ 106 - 2.21 60ft
2. 13.30 @ 106 - 2.17 60ft
3. 13.45 @ 107 - 2.32 60ft
Stock Screened MAF
1. 13.31 @ 107 - 2.22 60ft
2. 13.30 @ 108 - 2.19 60ft
3. 13.31 @ 109 - 2.28 60ft
Trap seemed to have been consistantly higher, i wanted to get one or two more runs in but it was too late, they closed on me.
I ran several other times but missed gears and such
My 60fts suck horribly because i suck at the launching and i'm on regular Firestone Firehawks.
1999 Trans Am M6 - Lid, filter, FTRA, Borla/Cutout, fernco, and one stock *** shifter that makes for 2 foots long shifts. lol
