Default Settle it Once and for All!!! - FIPK vs LID

Okay. I've heard both are the best and both are the worst. What is the real deal?

I have a K&N FIPK and I'm curious if it is worth swapping out for a lid...?

All opinions are welcomed - and please vote.

I know a guy here in town with a K&N FIPK put his car on the dyno and he picked up 10 rwhp when he installed an SLP air lid. He did this on back to back pulls with no other changes.

I voted Lid
Because with a lid all the air comes from the front through the Aibox
Without the Airbox and using an open element fliter system like the FIPK your still getting hot under hood air. JMO

+1 for the lid and the 'free ram-air' mod. You can use your stock radiator air-dam to force air into the lid. It's like GM wanted us to do it!

Besides who wants their intake pulling in random hot air from the engine bay?!?!

The only way to settle this is with these two intakes on the same car on the same dyno. I'm sure that most everyone is like me, either we have a lid or have a FIPK, most havent had both.

Get SilverBeast's buddy's dyno stats on his switch. I'm sure he dynoed with both before he switched. Otherwise, he wouldn't have switched.
I noticed a nice "seat of the pants" improvement when I went to a TSP lid and K&N filter. It improved my throttle response noticably.

For the cost of the FIPK you could do a lid AND a ram kit like the ftra or ssra. I would bet money that combo would make more horespower.

You guys are crazy!! A lid is designed to reduce sound and still perform...somewhat....

A FIPK is a great addition to the LS1, especially if you add the SLP cold air induction kit. That claim of 10 HP with a lid over the FIPK cannot be true. Either someone over oiled the filter, or something else.

I DO agree that they are pricey. I have put one on my 02' SS and the wife's numerous Suburbans and have ALWAYS been very happy with them. I even put one on my 6.0L work truck!

I have a FIPK on there now and that's all I've ever known (I bought it with it on). I'm about to go crazy with performance mods, should nothing else go wrong (knock on wood). Just wanted to know if it is worth the money to swap it out.

Interesting seeing what everyone has said.

Great move to look here for advice. Remember that everyone's input is just an opinion, but they all matter. Take all of it and form your own and have fun!!

some sort of ram air combined with a good lid is likely to be your best bet based on what I've seen with my friends lt1 with ram air mod

it should be a crime to charge what K&N does for some of their intake stuff...$150-200 for a plastic tube? screw that
